Deal High Street awarded Telegraph's High Street of the Year award! http://www.telegraph.co.uk/lifestyle/reinvent-the-high-street/10547216/Reinventing-the-high-street-Deal-wins-high-street-award.html?fbDeal is steeped in history having not one but three castles built by Henry VIII, namely Deal, Walmer and Sandown. The first two can be visited; Sandown Castle (only a few stones remain) is on the cycle path that follows the coastal path. Deal has a town motto of “Adjuvate Advenas” which for those not familiar with Latin translates as "Befriend a Stranger" - perfect for those wanting to be made welcome on a self catering holiday to Deal!A former smugglers paradise, Deal has long held an attraction for artists and bohemians, whilst retaining authentic seaside charm. The Cottage is on the edge of the historic Conservation Area, with winding lanes and 17th century fishermen’s cottages. The lovely seaside town of Deal has many independent shops to choose from, a weekly Saturday market selling local produce, antiques & vintage homewares; good pubs, great cafes and decent restaurants are all on your doorstep - as well as supermarkets and High Street shops all a few minutes’ walk from the house. You can also hire bicycles in the town and you can fish from the pier. The owners are always happy to recommend our favourite places to visit, eat, drink and shop. And don’t forget the beach. Three miles of uninterrupted pebble beach are two minutes from the front door. For sandy beaches Sandwich Bay and Broadstairs are a short drive away. All within walking distance of the cottage you will find the sea, The Pier, The Royal Hotel, Deal & Walmer Castles, The Timeball Tower Museum, an outdoor free paddling pool, crazy golf, pitch & putt, Walmer bandstand, the Zetland Arms on the beach at Kingsdown and the start of the world-famous White Cliffs coastal walk. There’s a plaque commemorating Julius Caesar landing at Deal and on a clear day you can see the French coast.Deal has an annual Arts Festival, a Folk Festival, the Astor Theatre and the regionally famous Deal Town Braderie (a "bric-a-brac" sale) in early September when the High Street is given over to stalls selling all manner of vintage, retro & antique treasures.Children will be keen to visit Port Lympne and Howletts Wild Animal Parks, again just a short journey from Deal and a great day out.For garden enthusiasts there are lovely gardens at Walmer Castle and further afield the beautiful gardens a Goodnestone are quite stunning. A relaxing afternoon can be spent exploring the gardens and then enjoying the British tradition of homemade afternoon tea.Of course this area is a golfer's paradise with the golf courses of Royal St George's in Sandwich, Royal Cinque Ports at Deal, Hythe, Canterbury and North Foreland all within a short drive. Other sporting activities include the many water sports activities one might expect by the sea as well as good fishing possibilities both on the coast and lakes inland. If France beckons then why not take a ferry from Dover or the Channel Tunnel at Folkestone for a day trip, so don't forget to bring your passports!Inland a short drive away is the historic City of Canterbury with its cobbled streets and magnificent Cathedral. Many hours can be spent exploring and enjoying everything that this Medieval City has to offer.Location, Location... being just 9 miles from the port of Dover, 17 miles from Canterbury and 90 miles from London, Deal is a thriving market town on the eastern tip of Kent. Deal train station is a 15 minute walk, with a regular direct train service to London, Sandwich, Dover, Folkestone and Ramsgate; and quick connections to Broadstairs and Margate. For more ideas please visit our 'things to do' section on the website.
