The Aquitaine/Dordogne region
Aquitaine has miles and miles of fine sandy beaches, and lots of lakes for swimming in safety.
One of the greatest assets of Aquitaine is it's unique network of cycling tracks. 500 km of cycling, trailing the coast line and the Landaise pine forest.
The Aquitaine coastline is one long beach of fine sand and rocky coves. 250 km in a single stretch....and so much more - skiing, walking, surfing, swimming, fishing, hiking, cycling, horse riding, golfing, shopping - all within a few minutes drive.
The weather here is mild all year, very warm in summer months.

There are lots of extremely good and reasonably priced restaurants locally. Local farmers markets held throughout the summer.
We are only 5 minutes from Dax, (a beautiful market town renowned for its hot water springs and healing mud).
Dax is a historic town, with Roman baths and hot water springs. Famed for its natural hot water of 62.4 degrees centigrade, and healing mud from the River Adour. The Roman baths are a focal point Dax. There are several hot water outlets around the town, where you can take a mud bath, or just bathe in the waters. In August Dax holds its annual fete, two weeks of celebrations ending in a magnificient firework display. All the surounding villages hold fetes during the summer, most having firework displays at the end of the fete.

Biarritz has a beautiful rocky coastline with sandy beaches. Biarritz is today Europe's surf capital.
From 30 minutes drive.
Famous for its "fête" - 5 days of non-stop festivities. Bayonne is also known for its bull fighting in August, and its famous ham. (Danish bacon is still the best!)30 minutes drive

"This property has the wow factor in spades."
I stayed here with my wife, her parents, sister and huband and their children. We all thoroughly enjoyed the house, it is so spacious. The pool was lovely and hving a pool house was boon. We made lots of use of the barbeque and had nearly all our meals outside, either on the terrace on in the pool house. The local shop really is only a couple of minutes away and stocks quite a large variety of goods. We used the Intermarche at Port Sud as this is only a 5 minute drive from the house, for our big shopping.
We spent most of the time at the house, and occasionally went to the beaches which were all within a half hours drive and are very clean.
The owners, who came twice weekly to water plants and see to the pool, were extremely helpful, although just about every leaflet imaginable is at the house, it is much easier to actually ask someone about the local events etc.
All in all it was a wonderful holiday in a beautiful location, which was both quiet and peaceful but near enough to all amenities. As another guest said, the advert does not do it justice. We were really impressed with the property.

"Going Batty at Honeysuckle"
Oh dear we feel like party poopers. We don't disagree with all the comments for Honeysuckle Farm, it is potentially a great place to have a holiday especially for groups such as families looking … More
See other reviews - this is the first complaint we have ever had.
Pipistrelle bats are about the size of a large butterfly. Their tiny droppings are found against the wall of the house. We have never before had complaints about bats, and we have never known them come into the house. Most people find them enchanting, they certainly do not dive-bomb people, and are very good at avoiding obstacles such as humans I am informed by the SPA (the equivalent of the RSPCA) There is an article in the house giving information on pipistrelle bats. Their echolocation system is above that of human hearing – it is not mentioned in the house that they make a noise mid-afternoon, just that we have bats roosting on the beam at the top of the terrace roof.
This particular family's deposit was retained because we had to hire an extra 2 cleaners (we always have 2 for inside and 2 for gardens and pool, this is inclusive in the cost of the holiday) therefore that day we had 4 cleaners to clean up inside the house and the terrace after the family left, and their deposit of £200 did not cover the 320 euro cost of 2 extra cleaners. They had left food all over the floors in places like under tables and under chairs, the dishwasher was left in a very dirty condition, cutlery in drawers and pots and pans in the cupboards were not clean. The cooker was filthy. The tiled floors were very sticky in places, obviously due to spilt drinks not properly cleaned up, meaning the floors had to be scrubbed, not just swept and mopped. We could go on but suffice to say that we have never had the house left in such a dreadful condition. The cost of 320 euros for 2 extra cleaners was the only reason that the deposit was not returned. 2 cleaners usually manage to clean the inside of the house in the 6 hours that we have between lets.
The fridge/freezer is huge and was new in March 2013, so when there were problems and it was reported to us, we arranged for an engineer to call (unfortunately this was just after the family had left.) He found nothing wrong with the fridge, just that the buttons had been inadvertently pressed, giving the wrong settings.
When this family were here, the weather was exceptionally hot and humid. Indeed tropical, which is very unusual. They asked for and were given extra fans to help cope. There are always fans in every room of the house.
The sides of the pool were newly tiled in April 2013.
After the family left, I wrote explaining why their deposit would not be returned to them, but they were not at all happy and asked me to return their deposit in exchange for a good review!

Spent a week at Honeysuckle Farm with extended family. House is fantastic, great location (easy walk to local village), nice and quiet. Every place that we wanted to visit was a maximum of 1 hour drive. Can highly recommend St. Jean de luz!

"Totally relaxing beautiful place."
We went for a quiet break but we were looking for somewhere very nice indeed. Honeysuckle Farm is indeed a beautiful place to stay if you just want to get away from it all and stay in a beautiful house that has everything to offer for that relaxing break. The house is equipped with everything you could need . We used the BBQ up by the pool everyday and the shaded veranda was a godsend on those hot afternoons.
The place is so tranquil and quiet and it was everything and more that we were looking for so we would thoroughly recommend it. There was just me and my wife but the house is massive and it would be a wonderful place for a group/family getaway and the help we got from Joan was also fabulous.

"Lovely and private - a great place to chill out with a nice pool"
We had a very relaxing week in this lovely old farmhouse approx 35 minutes from the coast. Quiet location, private with lots of space. It had a lovely covered verandah where you could eat and sit and read in the shade. We had great weather and spent very little time inside but did appreciate catching up on the BBC news etc with Sky. In the unlucky event of poor weather, there are loads of books, DVDs, videos and games to keep you occupied in the 2 principal lounge areas. When it got too hot we just retired to the pool area and swam and sat in the shade. We only had a week here and wished it had been longer - there is plenty to see and do in the area and there was a huge amount of tourist literature available to browse through. A lovely holiday and we plan to return.

"Fantastic property, lovely grounds & pool, in area with lots to see & do - if you can bear to leave the house!"
We have just had a fanastic 2 weeks at Honeysuckle Farm - if only we could have stayed another week, or all summer....
The service and support provided from initial enquiry through to after our return was excellent. We left an ipod charger behind, and it arrived home only a day or so after we did! Joan and her husband visited the property to service the pool and water plants while we were there: they were discreet but very friendly and helpful.
We had a 3-generation family group of 11, aged from 10 to mid-70s (with a couple of teenage friends coming for a week or so each, so had a group 13 at "peak time").
This house was absolutely perfect, as it has so many lovely living areas (inside and outside) that there is always somewhere quiet if you want that - but there are a number of very large shared areas that could easily accommodate all. We had several Movie Nights in one lounge, and Games Nights in another.
The photos on the website are good - but simply can't do justice to the size, space and comfort both in the house, and in the grounds.
Having holidayed in regions that are generally more popular with UK self-caterers (Dordogne, Vendee, Provence), we were very pleasantly surprised with how much there is to see and do in this area. There are lots of fetes, festivals, markets, sports activities, night entertainment and beaches within a short drive. Don't be put off by mileage: it'sonly around half an hour to Biarritz, and other beach resorts - whereas it can take more than that time to go 5 miles on the Med coast!
THE PROPERTY - is huge yet cosy, spacious yet comfy, and comes with everything you could possibly need. Loads of towels, absolutely fantastic range of games, books, dvds and videos, and wonderful pool house with lots of loungers and pool toys etc. And, the wifi works!
THE TERRACES AND GROUNDS ARE GREAT - especially the huge eating and lounging terrace. We ate every meal but one (too windy one night!) on the terrace, easy to serve up from the kitchen, and the oldest and youngest members of our group spent many hours on the comfy chairs at the other end of the terrace during the day. The nice surprise was that there is another terrace round the corner, which runs the full width of the property and gets sun most of the day - it has a peaceful view over the fields below. Worth moving some chairs and loungers round there at lunchtime, and there is shade too if you want it.
POOL AREA is large and fenced. Lots of room to for all to get their loungers in good spots, and to set up the badminton net. And still loads of room for the dogs to run around. Unfortunately our dogs took to digging for the moles in the garden, but the owners were very understanding!
THE LOCAL VILLAGE - HUEGAS - really is just a 10 minute walk away, a bit uphill on the way there. The MiniMarket is a lot bigger than "Mini". As well as a wide range of groceries & drinks and fresh bread every day, there is a great selection of special breads on a Sunday (yes, open Sunday mornings!), and other specialities during the week. There's a good local bar/tabac with tables inside and outside, and restaurant service too. There are also tennis courts, and a post office (open in the mornings till 11.30).
SUPERMARKETS - in Dax - spoiled for choice. The nearest two are only about 8 mins drive away, but we preferred the big Carrefour just past the train station in Dax, c15 mins. NB: If you have a dog - the supermarkets sell meaty bones, fresh dog meat/mince - if only they did the same in the UK!
MARKETS - again, spoiled for choice. Dax has a night market on Monday evenings during the summer, well worth a visit, as well as the regular markets in the centre, and the morning food market in Les Halles at the weekend.
ACTIVITIES - so much to do in the local area, from water park and lakes, to chocolate museums, canoeing, fishing, gastronomy and more. There are lots of leaflets and brochures in the property, and a helpful tourist office in Dax. We even threw principles out of the window and went to see the Courses Landaise at the arena in Dax (bull fighting without the fight, bulls are NOT killed, and the acrobatics and atmosphere make for an entertaining evening - but depends on your principles)
Living areas are huge and very comfortable. Bedrooms are also very large - and great to have such flexible configurations (so many properties have only double bedrooms, or doubles + dorms). Even the single rooms are very spacious and charming - they'd be doubles in most other villas.
PLACES TO GO
We were torn between wanting to visit all the interesting towns & sights nearby, vs spending time in the lovely house, grounds & pool. Best to plan ahead to prioritise what you want to do! We visited, and can recommend:
Dax - canoeing, eating in the bar in St Vincent, eating in the square (to watch what's going on), spending time down by the river, walking past the tea-dancing, going to the arena
St Sebastian - Spain - only just over an hours drive. Great seafood in the old port, worth a whole day to meander the side streets, never mind the main sights!
Biarritz - just over half an hour
Seignosse - for the beach, and the waterpark if you want to
Hossegor - for the lake (maybe more crowded in August, but wasnt in early July) and the beach, also the village
Capbreton - for the market, the town, the marina and the beach. Lovely.
Hope to come back again to Honeysuckle Farm, and highly recommend it
