The Aquitaine / Dordogne / Landes region
One of the greatest assets of Aquitaine is it's unique network of cycling tracks. 500 km of cycling, trailing the coast line and the Landaise pine forest. The Aquitaine coastline is one long beach of fine sand and rocky coves. 250 km in a single stretch. Wouldn't want to walk that in a hurry. From 20 minutes to 1h20 from the chalet. ...and so much more - skiing, walking, surfing, swimming, hiking, cycling, horse riding, golfing, shopping - all within a few minutes drive.
The weather here is mild all year, very warm in summer months.
Dax area
The chalet is situated on the edge of a small lake, on the outskirts of a quiet Landais village in South West France. 10 minutes from Dax (a beautiful market town renowned for its hot water springs and healing mud). 30 minutes from Biarritz, with its international airport, beautiful coastline and wonderful surfing. 45 minutes from Pau and the Pyrenees mountains and it's ski resorts.
Famed for its natural hot water of 62.4 degrees centigrade, and healing mud from the River Adour. The Roman baths are a focal point Dax. There are several hot water outlets around the town, where you can take a mud bath, or just bathe in the waters. In August Dax holds its annual fete, two weeks of celebrations ending in a magnificent firework display.
Biarritz and it's international airport is about 30 mins away and has a beautiful rocky coastline with sandy beaches and is today Europe's surf capital.
Bayonne is a 30 minutes drive Famous for its fïesta - 5 days of non-stop festivities. also known for its bull fighting in August, and its famous ham. (Danish bacon is still the best!)
St Jean de Luz, the old "Pirates town" with a beautiful harbor. Here and in the place Louis XIV are the ever popular artists, who display their paintings along the street. You can even get your portrait painted "while you wait".In the harbor you can take a boat to see the sights. It has a wonderful sandy beach in a natural bay. 40 minutes drive.
Pau is a 45 mins. drive away with it's international airport and is a wonderful town to go for a day , it is full of shops , restaurants and bars . It also has a little English where you could get your English bangers from.
The Pyrenees are about 40 mins drive to the ski slopes for winter or hiking in the summer , there are lots of sits to see up there , definitely worth a try .
The Dune du pyla is a 3 hrs drive and is the largest sand dune in Europe .They even do paragliding of it .There are steps to get to the top but it is still a hard walk to the top . Also a definite place to go .
Carcassonne is a 2.30 hrs drive a medieval town with very nice restaurants and lots of site seeings including the dungeons .
How to get there
Routes from Calais can be emailed if required. We are 600 miles south of Calais. Easy driving all the way. Ryanair fly from Stanstead to Biarritz twice daily. Arrangements can be made for collection from Biarritz or Pau airport which are both 60 km away.
From the D947 Dax to Orthez road, take the Clermont sign at roundabout (approx. 12 km. from Dax). Once you see the Clermont village sign, continue straight on and you will se a Bar/Tabac on the left. Go straight past this and take the next turn on the left (signed Camping Lagarest).Smallwater Lake is 1341 meters from that junction, on the left, just after the camping, also on the left.
