Enquire nowThe West Country / Devon region
The large county of Devon has a small population of 1.1m people. Devon is unique in the UK by having two distinct coastlines with some of the cleanest beaches and the UNESCO world heritage 'Jurassic Coast'. It has the second highest annual hours of sunshine in the UK and boasts two National Parks: Dartmoor and Exmoor.
Well served by motorways and mainline railways as well as Exeter Airport, South Devon is easy to reach.
The provincial capital city of Exeter was once the most south-westerly fortified Roman settlement in Britain. The Cathedral (building completed in 1400) has flying butresses and the longest vaulted ceiling in England. All over the county there are attractions for visitors as Devon has remained a firm favorite with vacationers since the 19th century.
The Dawlish / Ashcombe area
The Ashcombe Country Cottages can accommodate up to 150 people in 12 cottages around the Ashcombe Estate. The Ashcombe Activity Centre for outdoor fun includes a huge clay pigeon area, off-road quad bike safaris, archery, paintball and much more. Located in a secluded valley away from the cottages.
The Ashcombe Village Club is a members club open to our cottage guests. It is always a hive of activity and a great place to have a beer and soak up local gossip! Open to all on Friday, Saturday and Tuesday nights.
Ashcombe is a 2,500 acre estate - loved by villagers and visitors alike for the beautiful scenery and friendly atmosphere. There are acres of walks in the ancient Tower Plantation and miles of country lanes to amble down.
Ashcombe is only 4 miles from the seaside town of Dawlish and the glorious coast road which winds along the English Riviera. From a traditional 'bucket and spade' beach day to sailing, walking, bird-watching, surfing, scuba diving and water-skiing there is something for everyone to enjoy.
Ashcombe is within 30 minutes drive of Dartmoor. An area of all-year-round outstanding natural beauty. Dartmoor is one of 15 National Parks and has some of the most stunning views and features to explore.
For an adventurous day, Crealy Park is open all year round (weekends in winter) offering a range of roller coasters, adventures and activities which will keep children and parents amused for hours - for days!
Splashdown at Quaywest waterpark in Paignton runs from the second May bank holiday to 26th September. 8 fantastic waterflumes to choose from including the very scary Devil’s Drop to the more gentle chill-out pool, toddlersplash and submarine.
Woodlands Family Theme Park provides a whole day of variety for all ages. 16 family rides including 3 water coasters, indoor playcentres with great slides, outdoor adventure courses, a zoo, 'Big Fun Farm', Falconry Centre and Wildlife Sanctuary.
Bicton Gardens are open from 10am - 5pm every day. The landscaped park combines 18th century tranquility with modern amenities to provide all year round enjoyment for everyone of all ages including the Bicton Woodland Railway train ride, nature trail, maze, mini golf, indoor and outdoor children’s play areas, ice-free skating, restaurant and shop.
Babbacombe Model Village and gardens offers a world of miniature marvels, with hudreds of models depicting English life over the last five decades. All this is set in 4 acres of award winning gardens. Special events throughout the year include illuminations and a Winter Wonderland.
Paignton Zoo is one of the UK's leading zoos with thousands of amazing animals and plants including lions, elephants, tigers and crocodiles - only a short drive away from Ashcombe.
Other local attractions in South Devon include Canonteign Falls - England's highest waterfall at 220ft, plus Dartmoor's Becky Falls - voted Devon's Top Beauty Spot (open in summer only).
Go to watch the horseracing at The Devon & Exeter Race course, just 10 minutes from Ashcombe, at Haldon is the UK's second longest course and the highest. Newton Abbot racecourse is also less than 10 miles away and runs races from March until late summer
Haldon Forest makes great family day out offering miles of walking and cycling trails, play features, Go Ape! Highwire adventure course, cycle hire, cafe, the Centre for Contemporary Art and the Natural World, and opportunities for quiet reflection off the beaten path.
The Torbay Regatta is a week long event in August combining Babbacombe, Brixham, Paignton and Royal Torbay Regattas into one huge sailing event covering many classes of dinghis and yachts. The RNLI fancy dress pursuit race, Red Arrows and fireworks displays are superb.
The Royal Dartmouth Regatta on 25-27 August 2011, is probably one of the most spectacular natural arenas for airshows and displays as the river harbour in the deep valley is the stage for the audacious action events spread over three days. The Red Arrows feature every year, as well as displays by the Typhoon-Eurofighter, combat helicopters, fireworks, parachute displays, sailing races and naval demonstrations.
The Shaldon Regatta is designed for family participation, is bursting with fun events to watch and participate in. There are rowing and motor boat races, sailing races, children’s sandcastle competitions and beach races. Enter the five-a-side football contest and the rubber duck race. The event finishes with beach cricket, sailing and swimming events leading to the finale: a Pillow Fight for over 16’s.
The Dawlish Airshow on 18 August 2011, is the nearest event and puts on an amazing show with the Red Arrows and the Battle of Britain Flight plus hundreds of other participants jetting into the action. A few of the inhabitants of Ashcombe have had a go at Wing Walking... usually only once though! The Pram Race is a particular comedy highlight.
The Teignmouth Golf Course, barely 5 minutes away from the Ashcombe Cottages on Haldon Moor, is of traditional Mackenzie Design and one of the best heathland links golf courses in Devon. The Warren Golf Club is down by the sea at Dawlish Warren.
