The Turquoise Coast/Lycia region
Datça is said to have one of the healthiest climates in the world due its position between the Aegean and Mediterranean seas and sheltered by the mountains. There is always a breeze so it doesn't get the oppressive summer stickiness of other Turkish resorts. Spring is also a lovely time to visit Datça as the air is full of the smell of Orange Blossom with a fantastic display of wild spring flowers.
At the tip of the peninsula (38 km from Datca) stands the ancient Carian city of Knidos, described by Strabo as "a city that was built for the most beautiful of goddesses, Aphrodite, on the most beautiful of peninsulas." Today Knidos is considered as the border between the Mediterranean and Aegean seas where these two waters mix. It also offers a good anchorage for boats.
Datca area
There is a colourful market every Saturday where you can buy great local produce such as olive oil, cheese or honey.
With its location on a long straggly peninsula (in some places in the centre just a few hundred metres wide) the Datça peninsula offers many beaches and bays to discover by car or by boat or by foot. You can always find a restaurant or two offering fresh fish caught that day.
The nine small Turkish villages dotted across the peninsula are proud of their individuality and even boast accents in Turkish that are peculiar to each village! The neighbouring village of Eski Datça, with old Greek houses and a few cafes, is great to wander around in the late afternoon.
Knidos We would recommend a trip by car or motorbike to Knidos for a picnic by the ruins or as part of an all-day boat trip from Datça.
Boat Trips All-day or half-day boat trips from the harbour to the many bays around the peninsula can be arranged including an itinerary of your choice and lunch freshly cooked on the boat. We recommend Aydin Kaptan completely. He is a retired Blue Voyage captain with years of experience and really knows how to look after his guests for the day. He speaks English and can be found on his boat Damla in the harbour in the evenings or there is a phone number in our Welcome Book.
Windsurfing & Scuba Diving & Walking There are 2 windsurfing sites within 10 and 20 minutes drive from Datça and there are dive centres in Datça town and Aktur.
There are different walks that you can make around the beautiful countryside surrounding Datça. We have translated many of the routes especially for our guests and you can find them in the Villa Diva Welcome Book.
Festivals and Events in the Area - Datça is famous for its olive oil, almonds and honey and so its festivals reflect its delicious produce.
April: Almond Rice Day presented by the students of the Hotel and Tourism College 23rd April is a National Holiday Childrens Day where school children parade through the streets of Datça on their way to the grand finale on Republic Square down by the harbour.
August: Datça / Knidos Almond Fesitival including a best almond fesitival! 30th August - Bull Wrestling, but not like in Spain! Here the bulls wrestle each other.
September: 1st Sept - A joint celebration between Datça and the Greek island of Simi including swimmers from either side who swim to meet each other across the water!
How to get there
The 3 nearest airports serving Datça are Dalaman, Bodrum or Izmir, although Izmir is the furthest away. The drive from Marmaris is particularly stunning.
Fly to Dalaman with Thomas Cook, Thompsonfly, Excel, Onur Airlines and BA in summer season. From Dalaman airport the journey to Datça takes just over 2.5 hours by hire car. Most of the major hire car companies are represented at the airport.
If you dont want to drive, a taxi all the way from the airport direct to Datça costs about £90 (118 €). They should show you the set rates so you shouldn't get ripped off.
The cheapest route, but involves some waiting around for connections, is to take a taxi the short distance to Dalaman public bus station and pick up a coach to Marmaris (about 1.5 hours away) from where you pick up a dolmus (minibus) to Datça an hour away. There is also a free Turkish Airlines bus that you can take to Dalaman town, if you are catching an internal flight, from Istanbul for example.
Fly to Bodrum with Thomas Cook, Thompsonfly, Excel, Onur Airlines You can fly to Bodrum and then take the ferry to Körmen, on the north of the Datça peninsula. From here there is a free bus to the town centre. The ferry operates twice per day each way at 09.00 and 17.00 from May to around mid-October. The ferry trip takes 50 minutes.
Fly to Izmir with British Airways, Thomas Cook, Onur Air Pick up a hire car. The journey takes 4.5-5 hours, but is a lovely drive over the mountains. Alternatively, get a bus to Marmaris from Izmir bus station and then the dolmus (minibus) to Datça an hour away.
Ferry from Rhodes You can combine Greece and Turkey by taking a ferry from Rhodes on the weekly ferry to Datça.

Further details outdoors: The small complex , Marphe Villas, is built of Turkish stone with great care and attention paid to landscape gardening including antique urns, old millstones and Turkish Iznik tile details. It was designed by an award-winning Turkish architect and mirrors an old Ottoman street with overhanging balconies. The pool has loungers and umbrellas. In the Villa Diva garden there is a 6-seater table and chairs with a large shade. Guests have access to a Marphe Villa 's sister complex , Marphe Hotel, across the road where there is a restaurant which can also deliver cooked food to Villa Diva. Villa Diva guests can use the hotel for information or for any assistance. Motorbikes can also be rented here.

We have provided a detailed Welcome Booklet with information on Datca and the local area plus recommendations on trips, restaurants, shopping etc and a basic Turkish language guide.
The swimming pool is communal. There are 12 other properties on the complex. The steps up to the Villa are quite steep, so guests should be careful with little ones and anyone unsteady on their feet.

This property is set on a hill with main access up stone steps, therefore this would not be suitable for those with problems walking. However, cars may be driven up the side to avoid the climb.

Guestbook
" Villa Diva was perfect - beautifully furnished and with all mod cons - even children's dvds! Our trips in to Datca were great - lots of lovely places to eat and drink, great market and a beautiful harbour. Everyone is very friendly, especially to kids - ruffling their hair or pinching their cheeks as they passed by! Most days by the pool were spent at the hotel over the road; as you had said, that's where the children were and the pool itself was lovely. All the people to do with the hotel were lovely. It was really good to know that if there was a problem, they were there to sort it out (we ran out of gas and they were round within an hour or thereabouts).
We'll be back, but next time we will make sure that we do the drive from the airport in daylight - what we thought was pretty scary at 2.00 am turns out to be one of the most beautiful drives as you arrive in Datca. Julia and Michael Bramson July/August 2007
"The Villa is very comfortable with everything you will need for your holiday, cool bedrooms and bathrooms and every gadget, piece of cutlery and item of bedding you would have at home, unlike some holiday lets we have visited. The area around Datca is still unspoilt enough to feel off the beaten track, but the people in restaurants are used to providing a bit of translation so that it does not feel too daunting to go in and order dinner. I would recommend it. Sue Cooper and Bruce Kier. April 2007
"Villa Diva was a total tonic. The mix of ethnic traditional with classy modern minimal creates a lovely environment. Its a small development with an exclusive feel. Great pool for lounging around with a couple of Turkeys finest beers.
We spent our days beaching and driving around the peninsula in an open topped jeep. Great way to see the beautiful mountains covered with almond and pine trees. Highlight was our day out on Captain Aydins boat, a small launch with bags of character. We cruised around the coves, snorkelling in the crystal clear sea and eating fresh fish that the captain caught en route.
Datca is a really cool little place. Plenty of choice of places to eat from top of the range to home cooked Turkish. Very few Brits there on the whole as its mostly a Turkish resort. In the harbour youll find a few more Europeans docking their big fat yachts for the night and the whole vibe is like a small intimate Cannes. Old Datca just a few kilometres away is a fabulous higgledy piggledy stone village for a pleasant stroll. We want to go back in spring next time to see the hillsides covered in the almond blossom." Mandy Green and Ian White Sept 2006
"The villa itself was a lovely place we helped ourselves to the barbecue, lounged around the swimming pool and felt at home, even though we were only there for a week. Walking round Datça was great people would have a chat to us, help out and genuinely give us the time of day, whether we were in a shop, a bar or just shopping around for food. " Andy and Lianne, July 2006
