The West Country region

The West Country is an area of outstanding beauty in England, with rolling hills, moorland and a selection of beaches. The largest towns are Exeter and Plymouth, which both have Universities. The South Hams is particularly beautiful, nicknamed the English Riviera, because it has a climate that is generally a few degrees milder. From our apartment in Dartmouth a must is to take a river cruise up the Dart to 'alternative' Totnes. It is the the most beautiful stretch of water in the country. The South West Coastal path is here for those who love to take a hike. There are also some pretty walks inland through remote valleys and the lovely River Dart trail. Slapton Ley (5 miles) is a bird watching paradise. It has been classified as a site of Special Scientific Interest because of the rare species which thrive in the unique conditions. Start Bay has lots for divers with its colourful reefs - the Eastern Blackstone, Bull Rock, Mewstone, with their abundant life, wrecks of the Benton Castle, Greatham, Elsa and the Dutch Tug.

Dartmouth is renowned for sailing and a beautiful estuary. The ancient narrow streets house boutique shops, delicatessens, cafes and restaurants plus a market on Tues and Fri. Dartmouth is Devon's foodies heaven. Stay for the famous regatta, the music festival, food festival or comedy festival. Dartmouth has everything you will need -supermarkets, banks, a cinema etc. The historic Dartmouth Castle stands proudly at the mouth of the River Dart, with Kingswear Castle on the opposite river bank. The Royal Naval College has been a very important presence in Dartmouth for many many years and is an impressive building, overlooking this historic town. One of our favourite walks is to Dittisham from Dartmouth, you are able to catch a ferry to the beautiful Dittisham, (renowned for its plums), then walk back to Dartmouth through Long Wood, taking in the most stunning views. There is even a steam train with a pullman coach, for a spectacular journey to Paignton and back. I once heard a visitor say 'if you wanted to make up a town with everything, it would be just like Dartmouth!

"Nice Apartment Centrally Located in Dartmouth"

We were made very welcome and supplied with great information on surrounding area - more than 20 pubs within 5 minute walk etc.

Nice flat - ideal for a couple and also pet friendly.

"Magpie's Nest (Simply the Best)"

We really enjoyed our stay at the 'Magpie's Nest', we felt right at home as soon as we arrived. The flat is well situated in the centre of town, but is still peaceful and quiet.

Dartmouth is one of the most fantastic (Dog Friendly) towns in the UK with ample shops, bars and resturants, we loved our time there and with the comfort of coming and going to the 'Magpie's Nest' it made our stay very relaxing.
