The West Country region
The West Country has plenty to offer with miles of award winning beaches to relax on and acres of glorious countryside to explore.
If you like water sports the sea warmed by the Gulf Stream offers excellent surfing, kite surfing and wind surfing and if this sounds a bit much like hard work there are plenty of excellent pubs and restaurants to enjoy after a hard days exploring.
Dartmouth is a truly spectacular and beautiful place to visit, excellently located on the hillside, which looks down on the busy deep water harbour. It's the perfect place to come for all, you can either just relax and sit by the harbour front watching all types of sea faring vessels pass you by or, for the more adventurous, why not try your hand at sailing?
The choices are wide and varied from fishing, cliff walking, sailing and surfing, to the more relaxed recreations of golf, sun bathing, shopping, bird watching, crabbing and, for train enthusiasts, there is a fully operational steam railway close by.
If history interests you then Dartmouth is a must, with two castles standing at the mouth of the river Dart; a museum, which is housed in a 17th century merchant's house; a 19th century market square; several Elizabethan buildings; the 16th century cobbled Bayards Cove, which has been used for several films and TV programmes such as 'The Onedin Line'; and of course, the Britannia Royal Naval College, with its beautiful architecture and an abundance of maritime history (open to the public for tours).
The town is spectacular in the summer and becomes a sea of colour, winning many awards for its floral displays, and for those who love beautiful gardens you will surely enjoy a visit to Greenway House, once the home of Agatha Christie. There are also several National Trust properties close by.
Blackpool sands is only 3 miles away and is excellent for families. A short drive on is Slapton sands, a three mile stretch of shingle beach - it was here that allied troops practised for the D-Day landings. Further on is Beesands, a delightful, small fishing village. Finally, for spectacular views, it's well worth a drive to Start Point; here you can see most of the beaches in Start Bay and you can also visit the lighthouse.
Torquay, Paignton and Brixham are all within easy reach and they make excellent days out, which will surely keep all the family happy, and don't forget to come and witness one of the many festivals or events that go on in Dartmouth and surrounding areas.
