The West Country region

Devon is a popular holiday destination in South west England. The scenery and climate have made the area a favoured destination for the past 250 years. Over that time much has changed, yet much of the character and many of the local traditions have remained.

The coast and countryside are still extraordinarily beautiful, which is why more than two thirds of South Devon is carefully protected as a national asset, either in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty or as part of the Dartmoor National Park.

Dartmouth

Dartmouth is characterised by its narrow lanes, stairways and corridors and plenty of medieval and Elizabethan features. This is beautiful town steeped in history with many of the buildings dating back to the 16th and 17th centuries. The Cherub Public House is theoldest building in Dartmouth which dates back as far as 1380!

The Britannia Royal Naval College famous for training the Royal Navy's Officers sits majestically overlooking the town and down the River Dart towards Kingswear and the Dartmouth Castle and out to sea. The Paignton and Dartmouth Steam Railway is on the Kingwear side of the river and trains run regularly offering a traditional and unique blast from the past.

"A little over rated"

No mention is made of the atrocious parking situation in Dartmouth, the fact that the steps are VERY steep, and the damp patches in the bedrooms. Overpriced for what you get. If it's been recentl… More

We are sorry you experienced problems with parking in Dartmouth. It can be difficult to park in the town and particularly at peak times of the year. Most of our properties including Cairn House are provided with a parking permit which enables guests to park in the main car park for free and also in the neighbouring towns of Kingsbridge, Totnes and Salcombe. We have compared the rates with other comparable properties and the rates set for Cairn House are competitive in our opinion. The recent extreme wet weather over the winter period has affected most properties in Dartmouth and many are sufffering problems with water ingress. However, we have notified the Owner and we thank you for bringing this to our attention. We would like to offer you 10% off your next holiday booked through Blueriver Cottages and hope that you will enjoy coming to Dartmouth again one day. Best wishes Phil - Managing Director, Blueriver Cottages

"We should have guessed"

When you realise that the latest reviews on Blueriver Cottages website are in 2012, you should realise that this isn't a property people are rushing back to. Firstly the good points, very centra… More

Hello,

Thank you for taking to time to write a review.

We're sorry to hear you have found Cairn house to be insufficient for your circumstances.

Cairn House is and old property, originally built in 1632, this adds to its quirky character, including the staircase you mentioned, information regarding the stairs and property layout can be found on the access statement found on the Blueriver website. Thank you for your suggestion, we have updated the information on the website, it now states that the property is set over three floors with steep and narrow staircases to each floor.
As stated on the website the children's beds are suited for children 10 years and younger, we have not had any comments regarding this previously but will investigate your suggestion.

Living in Dartmouth I do understand that parking can be difficult a lot of the time during the summer season, the parking permit for April- September supplied with the property allows for parking in the Mayors Avenue car park located in the town centre or alternatively the Park and Ride at the top of town including a free 5 minute bus ride down in to the town, from the start of October parking restrictions around the town are lifted where in most places you can park all day and night.
Regarding the street directions, they had been change due to road works, we apologise you received the wrong directions, this has now been amended.

We are delighted to hear you found the kitchen to be well equipped and the location satisfactory.

It would be lovely to see you back again, please contact us for a discount should you decide to return.
