The Devon region
It is no surprise that South Devon, with its sheltered climate, plentiful river estuaries and seaside towns has a long history of tourism. Bordered by Exeter, Dartmoor, Plymouth and the sea, this is one of the most picturesque parts of the county. The sheltered coast, with the scenic estuaries of rivers flowing off Dartmoor, is the focus of the region’s tourist industry. The agricultural inland characterised by rolling hills is quieter but contains some gems such as the capital of alternative culture Totnes.
The coastal resorts on offer in South Devon are diverse. The small towns of Dawlish and Teignmouth just south of Exeter offer an understated and underexploited charm. The ten mile bay stretching between Hope’s Nose and Berry Head is known as Torbay and contains the busy tourist resorts of Torquay, Paignton and Brixham. Further south west are the rural South Hams containing elegant Dartmouth and pretty Salcombe along with some of the most beautiful beaches in the county.
There is plenty on offer to both families and couples. The South West Coastal Path offers some great walking and fantastic scenery. The sea offers plentiful opportunities to sail, scuba dive or fish. There is no shortage of attractions in the region. Paignton Zoo, Kents Cavern, two steam railways, the Golden Hind and numerous National Trust houses and gardens are just a few of the things on offer.
Dartmouth and Kingswear provide the perfect base from which to explore the South Hams. They are elegant towns facing each other on opposite banks of the River Dart and are connected by car and passenger ferries that travel to and fro throughout the day and evening.
The two towns have very different characters: sitting on the Torbay side of the river, Kingswear is the quieter relation. Largely residential, but with enough shops to keep the fridge stocked, and set into the steep river bank most of the houses enjoy fantastic views across the water to Dartmouth. Kingswear is the perfect base if you can’t choose between Torbay and the South Hams, providing easy access to both.
Arguably the food capital of Devon, Dartmouth sits on the South Hams side of the Dart and is home to a number of very high quality restaurants and numerous delicatessens and cafes. The town provides excellent shopping for those seeking something special, whether that be a piece of art or clothing. The river banks are busy here, with ferries coming and going from Kingswear, Totnes, Torquay and Dartmouth Castle.
Discover the South Hams by exploring its traditional villages and sprawling beaches, many with a short drive of Dartmouth. Slapton Sands, Blackpool Sands and Bigbury-on-Sea provide the perfect getaway to soak up the coastal splendour on offer or spend the day passing through idyllic countryside and experiencing the natural beauty of this stunning region. Within a short drive to the coast is the English Riviera, here you will find an abundance of attractions, events and activities all year round. You are also perfectly based to visit the city of Plymouth and still within a day trip of the famous Eden Project in Cornwall.
