The West Country region

We're very lucky in Lifton as there are loads of amazing things to do and see all around us and you'll literally be spoilt for choice when you visit.

To start with the cities of Exeter and Plymouth are both worth a look. Exeter has a lovely cathedral that is surrounded by a delightful square lined with shops and eateries, that is a perfect place to spend a few sunny hours. Plymouth has the historic Hoe and the Barbican, where you can find the National Marine Aquarium, with Britain's deepest tank.

There are some great beaches, such as Bude, Widemouth Bay (pronounced Widmouth) and Trebarwith Strand. There's also some great moor land to explore - Dartmoor is just up the road. In fact, there are loads of outdoor activities to do in Devon, and plenty of great things too.

Some of the more 'formal' attractions on offer include: the South Devon Steam Railway, that runs between Buckfastleigh and Totnes, and the Butterfly Farm and Otter Sanctuary, that is educational and great fun too.

There are plenty of great houses and National Trust properties within easy reach of The Cottage. Morwellham Quay is an award winning museum on the banks of the river Tamar, just outside Tavistock. Other houses of note are: Castle Drogo and Buckland Abbey.

We're very lucky to have The Eden Project and The Lost Gardens of Heligan under an hour away. Both are great attractions - Eden is probably more child friendly and has more to do indoors if the weather is poor, and Heligan is gentler and on the whole less busy - if that's what you'd prefer. There are loads of other great houses and gardens in the area too.

If you're into surfing there are some great sandy beaches in North Cornwall, that are also perfect for lazing in the sun. The coastline also lends itself to coasteering (exploring the coast from the water and the rocks) or perhaps a gentle walk along the cliff tops. But whatever your sport, it's usually possible in Cornwall somewhere. Green Tourism is also popular across the county.

Cornwall has some amazing countryside and quaint fishing ports, and boasts 12 areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Bodmin Moor is just up the road, where you can visit the famous Jamaica Inn. Also close by are: the Camel Estuary, Pedruthen to Padstow and Pentire Point to Widemouth.

Cornwall is bursting with some great tourist attractions, from castles to museums, historic houses to adventure parks, or galleries and wildlife sanctuaries. There's something for everyone.

Our nearest towns are Launceston and Tavistock, and both are worth a visit. Launceston is just over the border into Cornwall, and is the county's ancient capital. There is a castle, a museum, a steam railway and a selection of shops, pubs and cafés. Tavistock is an old stannary town, and has a number of attractions, including some great individual shops, a large pannier market and some lovely open spaces.

Close to Lifton is Dingles Fairground Heritage Centre. Here you can see the National Fairground Collection (and ride on many of them) as well as a collection of industrial and road steam engines. Just up the road is Roadford Lake, where you can try a variety of water sports, cast your rod for a spot of fishing, walk in the peaceful surroundings or sit in the restaurant looking out over the water.
