Townend Barn is in the centre of Lydford which is a thriving working village and an ideal base from which to explore Dartmoor only 15 minutes walk away, at the top of the road. The surrounding area is a beautifully unspoilt part of the moor. No ice cream vans or big buses here, just glorious panoramas - once you walk up behind Widgery Cross you are truly in wilderness. We can lend you maps, guide books and binoculars.

The Barn is beautifully converted to a high standard, the oak-floored barn is open plan but intimate, and heated by an efficient wood burning stove and night storage heaters. There is a grand piano which is beautiful to play. It is a calm and comfortable living space, equipped for two adults.

The kitchen is well-equipped so that you can cook comfortably. There is a television with Freeview and DVD player, plus a selection of DVDs. There are two bookcases filled with books for you to enjoy, and a CD player with CDs. Original paintings and wooden animal head sculptures decorate the walls. There is a double bed in bedroom off the living space with Egyptian cotton bedding, anti-allergen pillows and duvet. The bedroom has a beamed ceiling and tasteful furnishings. A clock/radio alarm is provided, as is a chest of drawers and garment rail for clothes. A sofa bed is available in the main living room. The separate bathroom has a good shower, WC and washbasin. Towels, bathmat etc. are provided.

On arrival a welcome homemade cream tea and pasties will be waiting for you. Access to the barn is via two granite steps. Smoking is not permitted in the Barn.

The West Country region

Northern Dartmoor is a relatively unspoilt part of the Moor. From Lydford you can see five tors which is a unique view of Dartmoor. We also have the granite way cycle path running through the village; you are welcome to borrow our mountain bikes to explore.

We provide walking guides giving details of the best local walks as well as good maps of the area. We would be delighted to advise you on the special places to visit. Lydford Gorge is a beautiful place to visit in any weather and you can walk to the main entrance from the Barn.

Townend Barn is ideally situated being just 5 minutes drive to the A30 which means you can quickly get to Cornwall and other areas of interest in Devon. We are in the center of the village so you can walk home after a relaxing meal out and not have to worry about the car.

Thank you very much for your review, it is great to hear that you had such a good time. We are looking forward to the brand new village shop opening in May 2014 stocking local produce and essentials. We have wifi but you are quite right the Vodafone signal is variable, however I have a phone on Orange/EE and it works well.
