The West Country region

Devons River Country: Devon's middle. This is farmers' Devon. You come here to be amongst them: to walk and admire their beautiful, rich-soiled, hilly and wooded farmland and enjoy their excellent, proper pubs in usually hill-top, compact, unspoilt villages; and to fish for trout and perhaps salmon in the deep wooded and very beautiful valleys of the rivers Torridge, Taw, Tamar and Exe especially and for trout in reservoirs. Great, magnetic views of Dartmoor and Exmoor from most hill-tops, and it's an easy drive to both. But don't think a daily trip to the sea will be a doddle.

Tiverton is the main town (you can go barging on its canal); Crediton, in its red-soil vale, Torrington, where glass is blown, and South Molton are the others. All have proper, individual, useful, and, in some cases unusual, shops, for the locals firstly. Cider is made at Winkleigh, and it's a good place for lunch. Hatherleigh is good for several things, including its market.

Lifton: village (famous fishermen's pub, shops) beside the river Tamar (salmon/trout fishing) in furthest west Devon. Launceston (handsome old Cornish hill-top town), 3 miles. Roadford Lake (watersports, walking), about 3 miles; Dartmoor, about 7; the north Cornwall coast at Boscastle, Port Isaac, Bude, just over 20 miles.

"Perfect, a proper home from home but much more peaceful!"

Really lovely, and very spacious cottage with lots of character. Very quiet and relaxing with good walks around the owners land including a lake and woods. Inside the cottage is very comfortable and clean and had everything I needed. The plentiful supply of logs and kindling for the woodburner kept me warm and cosy but there is also central heating for the mornings.
Lots to do in the area and the Lifton Farm Shop (just down the road) has everything you need, and more!

Thank you very much for your kind comments. I am so pleased that you enjoyed the cottage and the surrounding areas. I will let the homeowners know your thoughts, as I am sure they will be delighted to hear that you had such a good time, and I hope we might see you again.
