A99 - Lower Venton
Cottage | 3 bedrooms | sleeps 6
3 miles from Chagford and quietly hidden from the A382 is the tiny hamlet of Venton, brilliantly accessible and yet very private with just eight dwellings. At the end of the quiet lane and set back behind a little walled garden is this detached stone-built cottage, formerly two farm workers' cottages. To the back, a big, mainly lawned garden with patio (table/chairs), Wendy house and (through lockable gates) use of a good-sized paddock with lily pond (dragonflies) – a great place to run off steam.
Inside, full of character, homely, and welcoming. Large, tiled hall with 2 steps up to tiled kitchen/dining room (oil-fired Stanley stove, dishwasher, washing machine, microwave, electric 5-hob range cooker) and big table seating 8. Boot/drying room and downstairs loo. On the other side of hall, comfy living room (TV/DVD) with large inglenook fireplace (woodburner) and 2 steps up to sunroom with comfortable seating and view over the garden. Upstairs, three bedrooms – a twin with stripped floors (rugs), a small double, and the lovely, light master double with windows to both sides; smart shower-room (suite) and bathroom (suite). Freezer and tumble drier in garage. A friendly, comfortable cottage in a great position for exploring the moor and Devon. Dogs permitted in kitchen and boot room only.

The West Country region
Dartmoor: "the last great wilderness in Southern England". Great rock-tors top many of its often heather-covered hills. Marvellous for walking, riding, tor-climbing, picnicking, kite-flying, pony-trekking and, if you're at all energetic, not seeing other people. Just off its edge, amid woods, valleys and farmed hills, are many pretty villages (sometimes thatched) and very lively small towns. All is protected from caravans, tents and most ugliness by being in the Dartmoor National Park.
The half of the moor north of the B3212 is the highest and wildest; no villages within it, almost no cultivation. The southern half has the most spectacular tors, best wooded river valleys, a few villages (like Widecombe, Buckland) in green-field 'oases'. The moor's eastern edge is the softest, most wooded, most popular: Chagford, Moretonhampstead, Lustleigh and Bovey Tracey are among its best villages, and the river Teign is an exceptionally beautiful river valley. The Dart(s) – two of them rise in the moor's middle and join at Dartmeet – is/are equally beautiful all the way to the sea at Dartmouth. Very lovely, too, are the valleys of the rivers Avon, Erme, Walkham and Tavy; Tavy Cleave, on the latter, is the western moor's most dramatic place. The quality of a pub can change so quickly we hesitate to recommend, but there are plenty of them; and of places to ride or pony-trek.
Chagford: lively, friendly little town (pubs, shops, outdoor swimming pool, tennis) away from main roads in the shelter of high Dartmoor. Past it the river Teign (fishing) hurries through woods and meadows below Castle Drogo (Nat. Trust). Excellent walking; superb views. Open moor, 2 miles; golf, 3; Exeter (city amenities), 17; sea/beaches, about 20.
