A86 - Haytor Lodge
Cottage | 3 bedrooms | sleeps 6
2 miles from North Bovey in a lovely setting is Bovey Castle, built in 1907 as a country seat for the heir to the WH Smith empire and now a renowned hotel. Carefully hidden in the grounds are 22 private, granite-built lodges of which we offer 8. These smart, stylish, comfy properties overlook the Edwardian gardens, lake and tennis courts; parking is a 5 minute walk from the lodges (unloading/loading closer). All the hotel facilities are yours to enjoy, including indoor heated swimming pool (65' x 19'6" x 4'6" deep; no children before 9.30am or after 5.30pm), gym, steam room, sauna, spa (beauty treatments) and restaurant. Outside are hard and grass tennis courts (lessons available), croquet lawn (seasonal), cricket nets (late May to mid-September) and trampoline.
Supervised playroom for children under 8 (extra, available school holidays and half-terms) with arts and crafts, egg collecting and ferrets. Eight to 14 year olds can join the Bovey Rangers (school holidays only, extra) and enjoy activities ranging from rock climbing to survival skills. Optional activities for adults include archery, rifle shooting, fly fishing, falconry (daily display), riding, clay pigeon shooting and cider and sloe gin making. Wrapped around the hotel and lodges is a championship 18 hole golf course with driving range and pro shop; complimentary round (subject to availability, non-transferable) for all guests over 16. If you'd rather something a little quieter, roam the 400 acre estate (wellies provided). If you don't feel like cooking, order a restaurant meal or pizza to be delivered to your lodge, or, for a special occasion, book a table at the hotel's restaurant. The friendly hotel staff will help you arrange any activities you wish. Restricted use of hotel and children's facilities from 24 to 27 December and 31 December to 1 January (pool, spa and golf still available). An exceptional place to stay. Wedding licence. Maid service available (extra). Spring water. Arrival after 4pm.
Hay Tor is semi-detached. Open-plan living/dining/kitchen (dishwasher, microwave, freezer, larder fridge, cooker with ceramic hob). Living area (TV/Sky/DVD) has a big stone central fireplace ('living flame' gas fire) and two sets of French windows to a wrap-around balcony (tables/chairs). Large dining area with glass table. Stairs down to half-landing with loo (washbasin); more stairs down to utility room with sink and washer-drier, and two bedrooms – a double (6' zip-linked bed or twin) with en suite shower-room (suite), the other a double (6' zip-linked bed or twin) with en suite bathroom (suite plus bath-shower). From the living room, open tread stairs up to the master double with 6' bed, TV and en suite bathroom (suite plus bath-shower) with lovely views.

The West Country region
Dartmoor: "the last great wilderness in Southern England". Great rock-tors top many of its often heather-covered hills. Marvellous for walking, riding, tor-climbing, picnicking, kite-flying, pony-trekking and, if you're at all energetic, not seeing other people. Just off its edge, amid woods, valleys and farmed hills, are many pretty villages (sometimes thatched) and very lively small towns. All is protected from caravans, tents and most ugliness by being in the Dartmoor National Park.
The half of the moor north of the B3212 is the highest and wildest; no villages within it, almost no cultivation. The southern half has the most spectacular tors, best wooded river valleys, a few villages (like Widecombe, Buckland) in green-field 'oases'. The moor's eastern edge is the softest, most wooded, most popular: Chagford, Moretonhampstead, Lustleigh and Bovey Tracey are among its best villages, and the river Teign is an exceptionally beautiful river valley. The Dart(s) – two of them rise in the moor's middle and join at Dartmeet – is/are equally beautiful all the way to the sea at Dartmouth. Very lovely, too, are the valleys of the rivers Avon, Erme, Walkham and Tavy; Tavy Cleave, on the latter, is the western moor's most dramatic place. The quality of a pub can change so quickly we hesitate to recommend, but there are plenty of them; and of places to ride or pony-trek.
North Bovey: postcard-pretty village (good food pub, medieval church) with tree-shaded green in the beautiful wooded valley of the mini river Bovey, two lane-miles from the spectacular open moor around Manaton or Moretonhampstead. Bovey Castle (hotel, good restaurant, golf), about 2 miles.
