A179 - Butterdon Barn
Cottage | 2 bedrooms | sleeps 4
1½ miles from Moretonhampstead, a detached cottage recently converted from an ancient granite barn, with private hot tub and good views across fields (livestock) to Dartmoor. Next door to the friendly owners' farmhouse, once the homestead of a small estate, and all set high on hills overlooking the fault-created valley that stretches south-east along this edge of Dartmoor. Now it's a smart, warm, efficient and peaceful place.
Glazed entrance door to open-plan living/dining/kitchen (TV/DVD, slimline dishwasher, washing machine, microwave, fridge-freezer) with woodburner; downstairs loo (washbasin). Upstairs, two bedrooms under the eaves – a double (zip-linked 6' bed or twin) with en suite bathroom (suite plus bath-shower), and a twin (zip-linkable to 6' double, limited clothes-hanging space) with en suite shower-room (suite). Local produce available from the owners. Outside, west-facing patio and mainly lawned, enclosed, private garden. Spring water. A great base for walking or for just 'getting away'.

The West Country region
Dartmoor: "the last great wilderness in Southern England". Great rock-tors top many of its often heather-covered hills. Marvellous for walking, riding, tor-climbing, picnicking, kite-flying, pony-trekking and, if you're at all energetic, not seeing other people. Just off its edge, amid woods, valleys and farmed hills, are many pretty villages (sometimes thatched) and very lively small towns. All is protected from caravans, tents and most ugliness by being in the Dartmoor National Park.
The half of the moor north of the B3212 is the highest and wildest; no villages within it, almost no cultivation. The southern half has the most spectacular tors, best wooded river valleys, a few villages (like Widecombe, Buckland) in green-field 'oases'. The moor's eastern edge is the softest, most wooded, most popular: Chagford, Moretonhampstead, Lustleigh and Bovey Tracey are among its best villages, and the river Teign is an exceptionally beautiful river valley. The Dart(s) – two of them rise in the moor's middle and join at Dartmeet – is/are equally beautiful all the way to the sea at Dartmouth. Very lovely, too, are the valleys of the rivers Avon, Erme, Walkham and Tavy; Tavy Cleave, on the latter, is the western moor's most dramatic place. The quality of a pub can change so quickly we hesitate to recommend, but there are plenty of them; and of places to ride or pony-trek.
Moretonhampstead: friendly, busy, gateway-to-Dartmoor village (shops, good food pubs, church, outdoor swimming pool); heath-topped and hills around; good walks locally and reservoir/river fishing not far. Two miles to one of the most beautiful parts of the moor; golf at Bovey Castle, 2 miles; popular Miniature Pony Centre, 2½. Chagford, 5 miles; Exeter, 13; the sea at Torbay/Teignmouth, 19.
