A mile from the centre of Tavistock, on the outer edge of a residential area with rolling countryside beyond, a very smart detached bungalow. In a good-sized corner plot, sitting high above the town (and just above the A390 – busy at times), it looks to the distant tors of Dartmoor. Spacious L-shaped layout, made very comfortable and well-equipped by thoughtful owners who live next door. Level lawned garden, mostly at the front (views), with enclosed sitting-out area (table/chairs, barbecue) to the side. Drive to small garage (ideal for storing bicycles/golf clubs etc, no vehicles).Paved path with step up to open porch (for coats/boots) and step up to front door; carpeted hall, off which: neat fitted kitchen (dishwasher, small washing machine, microwave, freezer, larder fridge) with back door and couple of steps down to sitting-out area; living room (TV/DVD, distant moorland views); dining room/snug (iPod dock, 4' sofa bed for alternative sleeping); two bedrooms – a double (5' bed), and a twin; bathroom (suite, step up to separate tiled walk-in shower area). Everything comfy and conveniently on one level. Well-placed for town, moors and exploring further afield.

The West Country region

Dartmoor: "the last great wilderness in Southern England". Great rock-tors top many of its often heather-covered hills. Marvellous for walking, riding, tor-climbing, picnicking, kite-flying, pony-trekking and, if you're at all energetic, not seeing other people. Just off its edge, amid woods, valleys and farmed hills, are many pretty villages (sometimes thatched) and very lively small towns. All is protected from caravans, tents and most ugliness by being in the Dartmoor National Park.

The half of the moor north of the B3212 is the highest and wildest; no villages within it, almost no cultivation. The southern half has the most spectacular tors, best wooded river valleys, a few villages (like Widecombe, Buckland) in green-field 'oases'. The moor's eastern edge is the softest, most wooded, most popular: Chagford, Moretonhampstead, Lustleigh and Bovey Tracey are among its best villages, and the river Teign is an exceptionally beautiful river valley. The Dart(s) – two of them rise in the moor's middle and join at Dartmeet – is/are equally beautiful all the way to the sea at Dartmouth. Very lovely, too, are the valleys of the rivers Avon, Erme, Walkham and Tavy; Tavy Cleave, on the latter, is the western moor's most dramatic place. The quality of a pub can change so quickly we hesitate to recommend, but there are plenty of them; and of places to ride or pony-trek.

Tavistock: fine ancient town on the river Tavy on the edge of Dartmoor, evolving around an abbey founded in 974, and Sir Francis Drake's home town. Lots of interesting shops, pannier/farmers' markets, pubs, restaurants, wharfside theatre (also films/live music), leisure centre. Golf, 1½ miles; horse riding and cycling routes within a few miles. Nat. Trust places (Cotehele, Buckland Abbey, Lydford Gorge, Saltram House) nearby. Plymouth, 9 miles.
