in the heart of Tavistock, on a quiet road moments from the centre, are five splendid apartments recently converted from a chapel. We let two. The conversion has been done to a very high finish and the apartments are wonderfully light, hugely spacious and very comfortable. A trouble-free, relaxing and thoroughly modern place to stay in this interesting and thriving town. The Chapel Apartment: stairs from communal hall to small lobby (loo, washbasin) to open-plan living/dining/kitchen with magnificent Italian spiral staircase (open tread) up to curved glass balcony (and bedrooms beyond) and original chapel windows. Smartly fitted kitchen area with shiny granite worktops (dishwasher, freezer, gas hob, larder fridge), and small utility cupboard (microwave, washer-drier); dining and comfortable seating areas (TV/DVD) below double-height ceilings add to the sense of space. Upstairs from the living area, three bedrooms, all with original chapel stained glass windows and soft, sumptuous modern furnishings – a large double (5' sleigh bed) with en suite shower-room, another double (5' bed), and a single (limited clothes-hanging space). Smart family bathroom (suite plus bath-shower). Outside, and a bit of a trek up steep steps, is a three-tiered, enclosed decked area (seating) with great views over Tavistock towards Dartmoor. Especially suitable for couples.

The West Country region

Dartmoor: "the last great wilderness in Southern England". Great rock-tors top many of its often heather-covered hills. Marvellous for walking, riding, tor-climbing, picnicking, kite-flying, pony-trekking and, if you're at all energetic, not seeing other people. Just off its edge, amid woods, valleys and farmed hills, are many pretty villages (sometimes thatched) and very lively small towns. All is protected from caravans, tents and most ugliness by being in the Dartmoor National Park.

The half of the moor north of the B3212 is the highest and wildest; no villages within it, almost no cultivation. The southern half has the most spectacular tors, best wooded river valleys, a few villages (like Widecombe, Buckland) in green-field 'oases'. The moor's eastern edge is the softest, most wooded, most popular: Chagford, Moretonhampstead, Lustleigh and Bovey Tracey are among its best villages, and the river Teign is an exceptionally beautiful river valley. The Dart(s) – two of them rise in the moor's middle and join at Dartmeet – is/are equally beautiful all the way to the sea at Dartmouth. Very lovely, too, are the valleys of the rivers Avon, Erme, Walkham and Tavy; Tavy Cleave, on the latter, is the western moor's most dramatic place. The quality of a pub can change so quickly we hesitate to recommend, but there are plenty of them; and of places to ride or pony-trek.

Dartmoor

Tavistock: fine ancient town on the river Tavy on the edge of Dartmoor, evolving around an abbey founded in 974, and Sir Francis Drake's home town. Lots of interesting shops, pannier/farmers' markets, pubs, restaurants, wharfside theatre (also films/live music), leisure centre. Golf, 1½ miles; horse riding and cycling routes within a few miles. Nat. Trust places (Cotehele, Buckland Abbey, Lydford Gorge, Saltram House) nearby. Plymouth, 9 miles.
