A85 - The Bakehouse
Cottage | 2 bedrooms | sleeps 4
' between Throwleigh (1 mile) and Gidleigh (1 mile), a beautifully renovated, late medieval cottage sheltered by oak trees. It has a well restored barn attached and faces south over its own neat, walled garden where you can sit in the sun and listen to nothing but bees, birdsong and the occasional sound of the friendly owners' chickens (free-range eggs). The owners live on the same smallholding in an ancient farmhouse with two friendly dogs and a cat. Inside, very smart with slate floors downstairs and beautiful oak floors upstairs. Door to hall off which shower-room (suite with big cubicle) and washer-drier in cupboard; step down to living/dining/fitted kitchen (gas hob/electric oven) with granite worktops, folding dining table/chairs, huge granite inglenook (woodburner) with cloam bread oven, TV/DVD and door (5'3" lintel) to small garden. Stairs from hall up to two bedrooms (limited clothes-hanging space) ' a roomy double (5' bed, TV) with handsome exposed roof timbers and the original ancient granite stairs down to the living room (but you don't have to use them!), and a room with twin beds (2'6", linkable to 5' double). Spring water. A lovely retreat, wonderful walking directly on to the moors from your doorstep; abundant wildlife and moorland archaeology.

The West Country region
Dartmoor: "the last great wilderness in Southern England". Great rock-tors top many of its often heather-covered hills. Marvellous for walking, riding, tor-climbing, picnicking, kite-flying, pony-trekking and, if you're at all energetic, not seeing other people. Just off its edge, amid woods, valleys and farmed hills, are many pretty villages (sometimes thatched) and very lively small towns. All is protected from caravans, tents and most ugliness by being in the Dartmoor National Park.
The half of the moor north of the B3212 is the highest and wildest; no villages within it, almost no cultivation. The southern half has the most spectacular tors, best wooded river valleys, a few villages (like Widecombe, Buckland) in green-field 'oases'. The moor's eastern edge is the softest, most wooded, most popular: Chagford, Moretonhampstead, Lustleigh and Bovey Tracey are among its best villages, and the river Teign is an exceptionally beautiful river valley. The Dart(s) – two of them rise in the moor's middle and join at Dartmeet – is/are equally beautiful all the way to the sea at Dartmouth. Very lovely, too, are the valleys of the rivers Avon, Erme, Walkham and Tavy; Tavy Cleave, on the latter, is the western moor's most dramatic place. The quality of a pub can change so quickly we hesitate to recommend, but there are plenty of them; and of places to ride or pony-trek.
Gidleigh: pretty hamlet with 16th cent. church and castle (in private grounds), 2 miles from Chagford, ¾ mile from the open moor (short walk to fine prehistoric stone circle and a lovely stretch of the North Teign River - swimming), and on the beautiful Mariners' Way footpath.
