A124 - Stickwick Manor
About the home
½ mile from Hennock, a fine, Grade II listed, 18th cent. Georgian manor house on three levels, with farmhouse attached one side and cottage the other. They share a large, sunny, enclosed front garden and, at the back, big playing lawn with swings, slide, sandpit and gas barbecue (small extra charge). All is set in spectacular countryside with far reaching views; 50 acres of lush farmland to wander, and woodland walk. There are friendly donkeys, rabbits, goats, chickens, ducks and a rustic play barn (pool table, table tennis, darts, ride-on toys, dressing-up box); 'larder shop' on site (eggs, farm reared bacon, sausages and burgers, seasonal veg, Dartmoor ice cream, homemade preserves, cakes and ready meals etc, available to pre-order) and professional catering available.
The manor house has big, beautiful reception rooms, stucco ceilings, original shutters and acres of space - an excellent blend of old and new styles. Front porch; big, impressive hall; an enormous walk-in open fire in the lovely dining room (can seat up to 20, iPod dock); elegant living room with woodburner, TV/DVD/video; fitted kitchen (dishwasher, microwave, Rayburn, double-oven gas range, larder fridge, TV/DVD); utility room (washing machine, tumble drier, fridge-freezer, second fridge); downstairs loo.
Upstairs to first floor and four bedrooms – a huge double (French-style 6' bed), another large double (6' zip-linked bed or twin) plus single with en suite bathroom (suite with separate shower), a pretty single(footboard), a twin with en suite bathroom (suite); bathroom (suite plus bath-shower) and shower-room (suite). On the second floor, three more bedrooms – two very large doubles (6' zip-linked beds or twin, 6'6” ceilings) with roll-top baths plus hand-showers, washbasins and en suite loos (washbasins), and a pretty single. Stairgates.
The whole house is a joy, so much work and thought has gone into making it wonderful for large family parties. With the farmhouse (A125a) can sleep 19 (interconnecting door) and with A125b can sleep 24. Daily cleaning available by arrangement (extra). Farmer-owners live on site. Logs included. Damages Deposit £250.

The West Country / Devon region
Dartmoor: "the last great wilderness in Southern England". Great rock-tors top many of its often heather-covered hills. Marvellous for walking, riding, tor-climbing, picnicking, kite-flying, pony-trekking and, if you're at all energetic, not seeing other people. Just off its edge, amid woods, valleys and farmed hills, are many pretty villages (sometimes thatched) and very lively small towns. All is protected from caravans, tents and most ugliness by being in the Dartmoor National Park.
The half of the moor north of the B3212 is the highest and wildest; no villages within it, almost no cultivation. The southern half has the most spectacular tors, best wooded river valleys, a few villages (like Widecombe, Buckland) in green-field 'oases'. The moor's eastern edge is the softest, most wooded, most popular: Chagford, Moretonhampstead, Lustleigh and Bovey Tracey are among its best villages, and the river Teign is an exceptionally beautiful river valley. The Dart(s) – two of them rise in the moor's middle and join at Dartmeet – is/are equally beautiful all the way to the sea at Dartmouth. Very lovely, too, are the valleys of the rivers Avon, Erme, Walkham and Tavy; Tavy Cleave, on the latter, is the western moor's most dramatic place. The quality of a pub can change so quickly we hesitate to recommend, but there are plenty of them; and of places to ride or pony-trek.
The Dartmoor / Hennock area
Hennock: little village (pub) on the south-east edge of the Dartmoor National Park, with immense views almost to the sea. Bovey Tracey (small town), 2 miles; leisure centre (indoor pool), 4; fishing reservoirs, outdoor pool, tennis, golf, riding stables, 2 miles; open moor, about 5; the sea at Teignmouth/Shaldon or Dawlish, 7, or Torbay, 10.
