About this location
The Limousin region
This is often described as the Lake District of France, with numerous small lakes and the huge Lac St. Pardoux within half an hour's drive. There are many attractive small towns with stone built houses and terracotta roofs and characterful restaurants and cafés, as well as the two cities of Limoges and Poitiers within an hour's drive for museums, parks and great shopping. From Easter to October there are fêtes, festivals and markets in most of the nearby towns.
In Montmorillon is the 'Cité de l'Ecrit' - the city of writing - with its tiny bookshops, papermakers and exhibitions.
We provide details of many suggested walks from the gîte, through quiet country lanes and grassy footpaths, through leafy glades to picnic spots alongside the two rivers nearby.
Every second Thursday evening in summer, Le Dorat stages a Producers' Market where you can buy your chosen meat direct from the producers' stalls and have it barbequed for eating at the long tables in the square in front of the Collegiale - a very sociable event not to be missed. Around July 14th every town and village puts on celebrations and fireworks. So whether it's sociable events or peace and quiet you want, you'll find it here.
