The Northern England / Yorkshire/Yorkshire Dales region
The North York Moors National Park covers 554 square miles, with landscape ranging from heather-clad moorland and deep secluded dales, to the cliffs and coves of the magnificent coastline. A haven for walkers, the area also boasts great cycling, gliding, riding and fishing, whilst North York Moors Railway is the perfect way to enjoy the beautiful scenery in a more relaxed setting. Visit the market towns of Pickering or Thirsk; the latter famous for its links with the English country vet and author, James Herriot. Nearby, some of Yorkshire’s best-loved villages including Thornton-le-Dale and Rosedale Abbey offer a taste of village life, as does Goathland, ‘Aidensfield’ in the TV series ‘Heartbeat’. Finally, stop off at Castle Howard and Duncombe Park, two of Britain’s most historic stately homes situated in breathtaking parklands and gardens. The cliffs, sandy beaches and smugglers’ caves of the Yorkshire coastline are a haven for beachcombers and coastal walkers. Discover the quaint fishing villages of Robin Hood’s Bay and Staithes, with their brightly coloured fishing boats. Finally, there’s the historic city of York, with its interactive Viking Centre, Roman walls, medieval streets, vibrant shops and gothic York Minster cathedral.
The Danby area
The village of Danby lies in the peaceful Esk Valley, and offers visitors a select range of amenities including two public houses, both serving excellent food, and a bakery. There is a visitor’s centre at nearby Danby Lodge which houses educational exhibitions, craft displays and a tea-room. The centre is set in 13 acres and offers visitors wonderful nature trails and other walks. The last of the working water mills on the River Esk can be found at the mouth of the river and has been restored to full working order. Danby Castle is now partly a ruin but has a fascinating history and was the home to Catherine Parr, Henry VIII’s last wife, when she was married to John Neville, Lord Latimer of Danby. This area makes a superb base to see this tremendous area.

Guestbook for 1235 - Wildflower Cottage
A great cottage and a lovely owner. It was just what we required. We will recommend it to others.

,Good location with a friendly and helpful owner. Clearly a lot of effort had been made to give it a 'farm feel' which was done very well. Fantastic views.

,Lovely setting and very pleasant cottage. Beds very comfortable. Plenty of room for 5 adults. Stunning views across the valley. We liked the easy access to both the N Yorks Moors and the coast. We would certainly book it again.
