The Northern England / Yorkshire/Yorkshire Dales region
The North York Moors National Park covers 554 square miles, with landscape ranging from heather-clad moorland and deep secluded dales, to the cliffs and coves of the magnificent coastline. A haven for walkers, the area also boasts great cycling, gliding, riding and fishing, whilst North York Moors Railway is the perfect way to enjoy the beautiful scenery in a more relaxed setting. Visit the market towns of Pickering or Thirsk; the latter famous for its links with the English country vet and author, James Herriot. Nearby, some of Yorkshire’s best-loved villages including Thornton-le-Dale and Rosedale Abbey offer a taste of village life, as does Goathland, ‘Aidensfield’ in the TV series ‘Heartbeat’. Finally, stop off at Castle Howard and Duncombe Park, two of Britain’s most historic stately homes situated in breathtaking parklands and gardens. The cliffs, sandy beaches and smugglers’ caves of the Yorkshire coastline are a haven for beachcombers and coastal walkers. Discover the quaint fishing villages of Robin Hood’s Bay and Staithes, with their brightly coloured fishing boats. Finally, there’s the historic city of York, with its interactive Viking Centre, Roman walls, medieval streets, vibrant shops and gothic York Minster cathedral.
The Danby area
Nestled in the beautiful and peaceful Esk Valley in the heart of The North York Moors, the little village of Danby has a lot to offer. With two pubs – both of which serve food - a bakery and a tea-room, this quaint little settlement is well served by local amenities. Nearby is the excellent National Park Visitor Centre at Danby Lodge, a historic building set within 13 acres of riverside pasture. The lodge also provides facilities for local exhibitions, nature trails and tea rooms. In addition there are also the ruins of a 14th Century castle and one of the only working water-mills on the River Esk. Running through the village on its way to Whitby is the Esk Valley Railway, whilst nearby the villages of Hutton-le-Hole and Lastingham, as well as the market town of Pickering, offer a variety of amenities not available in Danby itself.

,Very friendly owners, excellent accommodation and the location was absolutely beautiful. Will definitely return. Very child friendly - our kids loved feeding the horses and playing with the resident dog.

,The village was lovely and the cottage was well placed for both tourist attractions by day and within walking distance of two nice pubs in the evening. The garden was excellent for a young family. The owners very friendly!
