1017 - The Wheelhouse
About the home
This barn and wheelhouse conversion is a stunning property on the edge of the North York Moors National Park. Many of the original features have been retained including the enormous old beam that once powered the mill. The inviting and cosy sitting room is in the skeleton of the wheelhouse and is a quirky octagonal shape with windows on three sides to take in the views. The modern, well-equipped kitchen has a bright and airy dining area and there are three spacious and peaceful bedrooms, one of them on the galleried landing over the sitting room. The modern bathroom is on the ground floor and there is a first floor shower room. This welcoming property makes a wonderful base for a holiday in this fabulous area.

The Northern England / Yorkshire/Yorkshire Dales region
The North York Moors National Park covers 554 square miles, with landscape ranging from heather-clad moorland and deep secluded dales, to the cliffs and coves of the magnificent coastline. A haven for walkers, the area also boasts great cycling, gliding, riding and fishing, whilst North York Moors Railway is the perfect way to enjoy the beautiful scenery in a more relaxed setting.
Visit the market towns of Pickering or Thirsk; the latter famous for its links with the English country vet and author, James Herriot. Nearby, some of Yorkshire’s best-loved villages including Thornton-le-Dale and Rosedale Abbey offer a taste of village life, as does Goathland, ‘Aidensfield’ in the TV series ‘Heartbeat’. Finally, stop off at Castle Howard and Duncombe Park, two of Britain’s most historic stately homes situated in breathtaking parklands and gardens. The cliffs, sandy beaches and smugglers’ caves of the Yorkshire coastline are a haven for beachcombers and coastal walkers. Discover the quaint fishing villages of Robin Hood’s Bay and Staithes, with their brightly coloured fishing boats. Finally, there’s the historic city of York, with its interactive Viking Centre, Roman walls, medieval streets, vibrant shops and gothic York Minster cathedral.
The Danby area
The peaceful valley of Esk is the setting for Danby in the heart of the North York Moors. The village has an interesting history and is home to a 14th Century ruined castle and the last remaining working water mill on the River Esk. The Esk Valley Railway line runs through Danby and takes in some stunning scenery as it winds its way to Whitby. Danby Lodge is a historic building set in 13 acres of beautiful riverside pasture and has an excellent visitor centre with exhibitions, tea-rooms, a gift shop and various walks going through the parkland. The villages of Hutton-le-Hole and Lastingham and the town of Pickering are all within easy reach, as are the coastal villages of Robin Hood’s Bay, Staithes, and Saltburn.

Guestbook for 1017 - The Wheelhouse
The owner was really helpful and showed us around the farm. The location was ideal for beaches and very dog friendly. Loads of space for up to eight people and the kids loved the horses. We would happily book again.
