Home description

Villa Meliha, is a collaboration between ourselves, Cumali Oruc and his mighty team, Kemal Espinar the architect, and Remzey the project manager. We like to think we have the best of both worlds – our own ideas about what we want from a villa accompanied with the expertise of a company who have been working alongside with their clients for 17 years.

The villa is situated in a rural location near the foot of a mountain range. Villa Meliha is surrounded by cotton fields and lemon and orange and pomegranate groves. Our nearest neighbours are a farm and 2 other Oruc villas which are both a whole field away from us. We are just 1km off the Itzuzu beach road and it is a 20 minute walk into the village or a 5 minute bicycle ride.

The shops and restaurants we find are absolutely charming and you will never need to go hungry. The locals are warm and friendly hosts and nothing is too much trouble. Leon’s bar is a favourite local meeting place and our favourite eateries are the riverside Kordon, the Sahil and the Denizeti restaurants but you are really spoilt for choice.

For night life you need to head up the coast to Marmaris for the likes of disco’s, karaoke and the dreaded Brit bars, although there are things happening in Dalyan in the summer season for the young at heart. Our (14 & 17 yr old) kids enjoyed going off on their own and it does feel really safe for them to do so. Out of town on the Iztuzu beach road is the Golbasi open-air restaurant where you can dine right by the waters edge and feed the turtles and geese. The Ley ley (Stork) restaurant on the road to Orteca is where the storks nest and you can dine alongside lovely waterfalls and channels of water.

The Turquoise Coast/Lycia region

The Turquoise Coast around Kalkan is steeped in history with ancient Lycian rock tombs, Roman amphitheatres and a sunken city for the discerning historian to explore. Various guide books are available in the apartment as well as a copy of 'The Lycian Way' by Kate Clow which features maps of rural walks around the old coastline of Lycia.

Essential places to see include: Tlos, Sakklikent Gorge, Kekova (sunken city), Kale (ancient Fort), Pinar and the ruins and amphitheatres at Patara, Letoon and Xanthos. Patara is the birth place of Santa Claus and is currently undergoing excavation work to uncover its well preserved ruins underneath the sand.

The range and style of cuisine on offer exceeds what is generally available throughout coastal Turkey so it offers a culinary delight to suit all tastes. It is especially good for vegetarians and all the produce is fresh and local and grown on a fertile alluvial plane.

Some Turkish customs..

A sink plug may come in useful, as many hotels and small pensions do not supply a plug. This is because in the Muslim faith it is preferred that one washes in running water. A torch may be needed as some areas of road in Dalyan are unlit and of an uneven surface. Turkey also has many power cuts but these usually only last for a short while.

What to wear..

Light cotton summer clothing and cardigans for evening.

Comfortable shoes are necessary for visiting archeological and historical sites.

Sun hats and sunglasses are advisable in the summer.

Headscarves should be brought by women for visiting mosques.

Credit Cards..

You can obtain money from banks with your cards but may find it difficult to purchase goods, as many shops in Dalyan do not have the facilities for credit cards.

Water..

Although the water is clean it is not recommended that you drink it due to the high mineral content. Bottled water is not expensive.

Photography..

The Turkish landscape is perfect for photographic opportunities. Do be careful of Military Zones, inside museums. Some local people in villages may be offended if you take their picture. It is always wise to ask first.

Post office..

These can easily be spotted by the yellow PTT sign and is located in the centre of town. It offers many similar services that a bank does.

Dalyan / Itzuzu Beach area

Dalyan is located on the south west coast of Turkey, situated between Fethiye and Marmaris in the province of Mugla.

It is located approximately 25 kms from Dalaman Airport which is 25 to 30 minutes travelling time.
Marmaris is 96km, Fethiye is 75km and Köycegiz is 32km away. Each of these locations provide a number of amenities and facilities to suit all tastes.

Dalyan the village.
If you like simplicity and everything within easy reach Dalyan is ideal. Although vehicles are around there are lots of pedestrian areas and the dogs, cats, hens and the odd cow don’t really allow for much speed. You don’t need to hire a car, public transport is fine, taxis are cheap as are bike and moped hire. there are lots of pedestrian areas and the dogs, cats, hens and the odd cow don’t really allow for much speed.
The shops and restaurants we find are absolutely charming and you will never need to go hungry. The locals are warm and friendly hosts and nothing is too much trouble. Leon’s bar is a favourite local meeting place and Leon will entertain you with his ‘Cocktail’ throwing antics and his pole dancing expertise will amuse you too. Our favourite eateries are the riverside Kordon, the Sahil and the Denizeti restaurants but you are really spoilt for choice. For night life you need to head up the coast to Mamaris for the likes of disco’s, karaoke and the dreaded Brit bars, although there are things happening in the summer season in Dalyan for the young at heart. Our (14 & 17) kids enjoyed going off on their own and it does feel really safe for them to do so. Out of town on the Iztuzu beach road is the Golbasi open-air restaurant where you can dine right by the waters edge and feed the turtles and geese or the Ley ley (Stork) restaurant on the road to Orteca where the storks nest and you can dine alongside lovely waterfalls and channels of water.
In terms of wild-life Dalyan is a real treat. We have already spotted storks, herons, eagles, kingfishers, tortoises, millions of frogs, turtles, reptiles and lots of unusual birds so there is certainly plenty here for nature lovers. If you are lucky you will see the famous caretta caretta (loggerhead) turtle swimming up river .

Trips from Dalyan

We would recommend the river cruise to Iztuzu beach along the Dalyan river. There are tall reed beds along the estuary where you can see all sorts of water-fowl and river turtles too. The film the African Queen was filmed here. The beach is a 5km sand spit which is completely devoid of any buildings as it is a conservation area where the Caretta caretta turtles come ashore to lay their eggs. You can drive to the other end of the beach over a hill which commands stunning views of the beach and surrounding mountains.
A boat trip to the Sultaniye mud baths is worth a visit, followed by a shower and then a steep in the hot sulphur bath. There is a boat trip across the beautiful Lake Koycegiz where you can swim in the cool, clear fresh water. Not to be missed is the trip across the Dalyan river in a rowing boat to the ancient city of Kaunos which was founded about 9th century BC. It is well preserved and there is a magnificent amphitheatre and an acropolis, baths, a basilica and Byzantine fortifications in a beautiful setting with superb views.
We also really enjoyed the 12 island cruise in a gulet (sailing) boat from Fethiye bay. This was a day long trip which was really lovely and relaxing. You drop anchor at a number of pretty locations where you can eat, swim or even water ski, paraglide or banana–ride. Kaunos tours or Oruc travel can take you on a number of exciting trips or the local taxis if you want to be more independent are very helpful

The tourist season is from April to the end of October so these are the busiest months.

There are 5 Pharmacies (one is 24 hrs on a rota basis), 3 Doctors surgeries and 1 Health Centre.

Taxi ranks number a total of 4 to cater for your nights out and local journeys.

There is 1 Bank and 3 ATM machines while the local Post Office exchanges money too.
There are 2 Mosques which are interesting to view even for non-muslims.
There are 2 local schools.

There are public bus services to Fethiye, Marmaris, Göcek, Mugla - direct from Dalyan 10.00-11.00 am.
While the journey to Ortaca happens every 15 minutes during the day.

To travel to the beach at Dolmus, you can travel either by bus or boat and this is from 08.00 am onwards.

Guestbook

Aside from 7 days of unbroken sunshine and the Villa's superb setting, what really makes a stay there perfect is the attitude of the local Turkish community, not all of whom rely entirely on tourism for a livelihood. Their genuine warmth and friendliness leaves one feeling really welcome and this extends to the hassle-free centre of the main village in Dalyan where, after our evening meal, at the restaurant's invitation (and at no charge) we were taken by boat up river to the lake where the engine and lights were cut, allowing us to drift and look at the sky to watch meteorites streaking across countless stars.

The stunning, natural views and abundance of wildlife in the area leave one breathless and the Villa's design, comfort and facilities provide for restful downtime during even the hottest of August days; we were surprised that our children didn't develop gills while we were there, as they were rarely out of the pool, sea or lake!

Lastly, Oruc - the Villa managers - proved invaluable in arranging trips further afield and in expediting seamless airport transfers - little was too much trouble for them. Finally, while much of the local charm is generated by simple way the locals farm and live, one should be prepared for the odd 'farmyard aroma' when walking in the area and not be too perturbed by close encounters with cows, goats and the odd sheep!
