The Dumfries and Galloway region

Just over the English border lies Dumfries and Galloway in the west and the Scottish Borders in the east. These two very distinctive areas have retained a totally rural and tranquil atmosphere where visitors can enjoy a wonderful holiday away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. In fact here you'll find miles of beautiful untouched countryside and striking coastlines; a great place for outdoors holidays, fishing, walking, sailing and cycling. Coastal and beach strolls and small fishing harbours waiting to be explored. The capital city of Scotland, Edinburgh, is probably on most people's ‘must visit' list and with good reason. The city is renowned for its magnificent architecture and historical buildings, which include Edinburgh Castle and numerous museums and galleries. Today Edinburgh is a thriving modern city with world class shops and restaurants and lots of traditional atmospheric pubs

Those seeking a walking holiday in this wild and rugged region should begin with some of the splendid trails starting from the door of the property or from within the village. The Glen Isle walk for example, is sublime and offers fantastic views over the Solway Firth- a view to be truly savoured as the sun sets on the horizon! The local upland and hill walking is wonderful and highly recommended is the testing hike up Screel Hill. Fishermen should feel very much at home in this area as there are numerous opportunities for rough fishing and of course the sea fishing, given the rich, local marine life, is excellent. Lovers of fine and unusual architecture short visit nearby Orchardton Tower which has the distinction of being the only round tower house in the whole of Scotland! A destination well worth the journey time is the enormous Galloway Forest Park. In addition to offering a fantastic variety of wild-life that includes the majestic Red Kite, the walking and mountain-biking trails are first-class and the forest is also a designated night-sky park- one of the few places left in the western hemisphere where it is possible to enjoy a clear night sky without the distorting effects of night pollution.
