The Turquoise Coast/Lycia region

“White-sand beaches and lively tourist resorts draw holidaymakers to Dalaman. But the area has just as much to offer in terms of historical sites and untouched countryside.”

Slicing into Turkey's south west coast, Dalaman has been attracting visitors since ancient times. Back then, it was the destination of choice for Greek gods like Pegasus and Apollo. Today, the area pulls in more than two million tourists a year.

The region's appeal begins with its beaches. Known as the Turquoise Coast, Dalaman's shoreline is a chain of coves, bays and long stretches of sand. The bigger resorts have turned the beach break into an art form. In Icmeler and Fethiye, soft sands, beach bars and water-sports are all part of the package. And the famous Blue Lagoon in Olu Deniz is so spectacular it's been turned into a national park.

But the coast is just the tip of the iceberg. The region's mountainous backbone is encrusted with traditional hamlets that can be explored on 4x4 safaris. Dalaman is also within day-tripping distance of historical sites like Ephesus, which, in its glory days, was the second-biggest city in the Roman Empire. Plus it puts you within easy reach of Marmaris – a busy city that revolves around a colourful bazaar. Here, stallholders tout loudly, shisha smoke curls through the air, and shoppers haggle to buy replica designer handbags.

The distinctive Aegean Coast and the 'Turquoise' Mediterranean Coast are home to many of Turkey's most popular holiday destinations, and it's not hard to see why. Families and beach lovers flock here for the unbeatable combination of endless beaches and blue seas, while older families find something for everyone in the bigger, busier resorts. Couples of all ages head for the calmer, quainter resorts, while for the more intrepid, Turkey is a country literally littered with historical sights and its rich and varied landscape offers some highly recommended hiking. With something for everyone, Turkey pulls in all kinds of tourism.Along both of Turkey's major holiday coasts, white-washed towns neighbor huge marinas, and major cities have emerged alongside picturesque resorts that have lost little of their native flavour. The Aegean Coast is known for its cosmopolitan cities, pretty villages and spectacular sights, while on the Mediterranean Coast, mountains sweep down to the shoreline and beach resorts abound. With bustle of big resorts such as Gümbet and Marmaris, the subtler blend of old and new in Bodrum and Antalya or the beauty of Icmeler and Olu Deniz, has catered for every type of holiday.
