Home description

Words cannot do justice to the superb position of this villa, which is located in the very secluded and private Akkaya valley overlooking a beautiful lake, with pine forested mountains rising steeply around it. Access is easy to restaurants in the Dalaman area (only 15 mins drive), or in the international yachting centre of Gocek (only 20 mins drive through a new tunnel). Good beaches are only 20 -30 mins drive away. Main attractions at the villa are the complete peace and quiet in this beautiful Akkaya valley, where there are opportunities for many activities, including sailing on the nearby lake, or on the sea from Gocek, which has become a fashionable and very popular yachting centre. Other activities may include fishing, horse riding, rafting, walking, bird watching, or simply relaxing and listening to the croaking of frogs in the adjacent stream. The private 40 sq metre swimming pool in front of the villa is an unusual shape as it has been moulded around two huge rocks in front of the property. The villa has been furnished to a higher than average standard by the owner.

One of the unique features of this small development, is the very beautiful gardens in the deep ravine in front of the villas, with delightful paths (well lit by very attractive lighting features which blend in with the surroundings) pools, bridges across the stream, facilities for barbecues, and tree platforms for observing nature, or having a quiet drink. A meal can now be enjoyed at the "PASHAM" open air Riverside Restaurant and Bar (opened Sept 2007, subject to seasonal closure). There is direct access to this restaurant from the villa (only 2 minutes walk) down a well lit path and some steps (access for the disabled may be difficult however). There is an attractive grass roofed cocktail bar on a timber platform overlooking a pool often frequented by frogs and toads. Have your drink there or take it to one of several tree platforms a few yards away (see photos) although climbing down again afterwards after a drink or two is entirely your own responsibility! The restaurant so far has been located in the open air in the surrounding gardens (lovely for warm evenings), but a covered restaurant is being built for 2008, with cooler days in mind. The washroom is itself worth a visit having a view to rival any other! In dry season the river water is pumped on a grand scale so that the waterfall and adjacent stream still flow. Hundreds of plants and trees have been planted in this area.

Other facilities such as a Medical Centre (with an English speaking doctor), a Library, a small Supermarket, Tennis Courts, a Creche and a Health Club are all planned in due course.

The Turquoise Coast/Lycia region

Located in an area of outstanding natural beauty, opportunities for bird watching amongst the reed beds of Koycegiz Lake, visiting wonderful open air markets in Dalaman, Fethiye, Koycegiz and Dalyan. Swimming at Saragerme and Iztuzu beaches - the latter is famous as a breeding ground for the Caretta-Caretta turtles, and is off limits to people at night. Archaeology at historical sites of Kaunos (30 mins drive) and Ephesus (3 hours drive away) is fascinating. Dining along the riverside at Dalyan facing the floodlit Lycian tombs of ancient Kaunos is a magical experience. The famous Oludeniz Lagoon about an hour's drive away. A golf course is being constructed at Saragerme (competion expected sometime in 2008). The specacular Sarsala Cove is only about 30 mins away.

Dalaman / Akkaya Valley area

Dalaman is a small, mainly agricultural town, unspoiled by mass tourism, though it now has a modern international airport. Whilst there may be limited touristic attractions in the town itself, it is a very natural Turkish farming community, and does have good shops, cafes and restaurants, which are improving all the time as the area has been designated for touristic development by the government. Nearby Gocek is a very fashionable yaching centre.

Akkaya Valley has been developed as a hydro-electic project, with several dams along the river, forming several turquoise lakes which are attractively fringed with pink oleander bushes. The valley is being developed in a very sypathetic manner by local contractor Curbanoglu, constructing properties of a high standard. There are several housing developments being constructed in the valley which overlook the turquoise lakes.

There are opportunities for white water rafting in the area, for those looking for an exciting experience. Or perhaps a leisurely twelve island cruise from Gocek around the beautiful coast on board a "gulet" - a Turkish sailing schooner, anchoring in one of the many beautiful coves for a leisurely swim in the clear blue sea.

For those interested in archaeology or ancient history, there are many opportunities all along the coast for visiting some of these sites. To view the site at Kaunos (some interesting Lycian tombs of the ancient Kings as well as a well preserved amphitheatre, Roman baths etc) take the row boat across the river from Dalyan. The site is in a specacular position overlooking the estuary and the famous Iztuzu (turtle) beach, which forms a sandbar stretching for 4km. Other interesting sites are located at Fethiye, Kadyanda, Pinara, Xanthos, Tlos and Patara (to name just a few which can be reached within a day's outing). Others are accessible only by boat. Ephesus is a 3 hour drive away. The Greek islands of Rhodes and Symi are within easy reach and there are day excursions by hydrofoil from Fethiye or Marmaris in summer.

How to get there

For most of the year charter airlines such as Fly Thomas Cook, XL Airline, Monarch all fly direct to Dalaman from London Gatwick or Manchester (much less frequent in winter). Easy Jet are are now flying direct to Dalaman (taking over the routes previously operated by GB Airways under contract with BA). Alternative is Turkish Airlines via Istanbul. www.travelsupermarket.com or www.skyscanner.com are good places to start for comparisons. Bodrum and Antalya are both about 3 hours drive from Dalaman.

The villa is in the mountains, overlooking a lake. Only about 20 mins from Dalaman airport.

You will definitely need a car. Special rates available from Pandora Car Hire.

Further details

Please note that the pool is unfenced (as is customary in Turkey) and is very close to the villa. Extra care therefore needs to be taken regarding the supervision of very young children. Similarly the top terrace has a low level balustrade which may be hazardous for the very young (the solution is to keep the door to this terrace locked). The villa is located on a steep hillside. There are some steep drops and the owner will not accept responsibility for injuries or accidents resulting from a lack of parental supervision.

Road access to Whiterock from Dalaman is now fully tarred, but considerable care is necessary (particularly after dark), as the road is narrow and falls away quite steeply in places. Be warned and drive carefully!
