The Turquoise Coast/Lycia region
The weather in and around Sarigerme during the 'season' is dry and sunny with warm balmy evenings.
Average temperatures are:
Apr May Jun Jul Aug Sept Oct Nov
Average Daily Temp F 74 80 86 94 93 87 80 72
Average Daily Temp C 23 26 30 34 34 30 26 22
Average Sunshine Hrs 8 11 12 13 12 11 9 7
As the season progresses the sea temperature warms up from an April minimum of 17 C /65 F to a mid summer high of 26 C / 80 F.
From November until April there is still a lot of sunshine and the temperature rarely drops below 15 C ( 59 F) and long periods of rain are unusual, although it will rain at some time every couple of days.
The autumn and spring months are great times to explore the many archaeological sites in the area or an ideal time to walk the Lycian Way.
The Lycian Way is a 509km marked footpath around the coast of Lycia, from Fethiye to Antalya. It is a coastal walk and mild temperatures mean it can be walked throughout the winter months. We would recommendwalking the route in in spring or autumn; February -May or September-November.
The route is graded medium to hard and is not level walking, but has many ascents and descents as it approaches and veers away from the sea.
According to the Sunday Times the Lycian Way is one of the ten most beautiful long distance hikes of the world..
Sarigerme village is within a 10 minute walk of the villa. Here you will find a selection of small supermarkets, bars and restaurants.
Tours can be booked to local attractions; we recommend Basket or Panda Tours.
Sunday brings the local market with plenty of shopping opportunities and the chance to sample a traditional Turkish pancake and a glass of freshly squeezed pomegranate or orange juice.
The stunning 5km Blue Flag Beach is reached either by tractor trailer from the carpark or a 10 minute walk from the village. Acres of beautiful sand and outstanding facilities: there are sunbeds and umbrellas available at a small charge, a lifeguard on duty, first aid, toilets, showers and changing cabin, as well as food and drink outlets.
There are various watersports centres on the beach; learn how to sail a Hobie Cat, Kitesurf or simply swim out towards the small Island of Babaada.
Take a riverboat tour on the Dalyan Delta River to Iztuzu Beach or into Koyzegi Lake where you can visit the mud baths or just relax.
Iztuzu or Turtle beach has 5kms of crescent shaped, totally unspoilt beach to on which swim, walk or play. Motor boats are not allowed in this area, which is protected, because the giant loggerhead turtles breed between May and August. It is possible to go on early morning viewing trips to the beach to feed the turtles. There is also a turtle hospital/sanctuary which is well worth a visit.
The ancient trading city of Kaunos is just a short trip across the river. Marvel at the amazing Lycian tombs carved into the rock face in circa 400BC.
You can also hire bicycles and explore at your own pace. Lunch by the lake handfeeding terrapins is always a highlight!
The local market is a hive of activity every Saturday.
The bustling harbour and market town of Fethiye is on the south-eastern corner of The Gulf and about 45 mins drive from Sarigerme. It is the major commercial centre of the region and provides some fascinating sights and sounds, particularly on market day every Tuesday when the roads are full of vehicles of all types spilling over with all manner of produce destined to create the vibrant colours and smells of the market.
Fethiye retains a decidedly Turkish feel. Exploring the warren of shop-lined streets in the old quarter is a fascinating experience. Restaurants are abundant, and the authentic feel of Turkish life permeates the whole area, giving a real insight into town life in Turkey. The fish market is a particular favourite of ours. Choose your fish from the many fish stalls and for a small charge one of the many restaurants around the perimeter will cook it for you there and then, served with salad and freshly baked bread.
