The Red Sea Riviera/Sinai region
South Sinai is a really special place, famous as the home of Mount Sinai, where Moses is believed to have received the Ten Commandments. Thousands of tourists go every year to see the Monastery of St Katherine, built around the site of the Burning Bush, where Christian monks have lived since the 6th century. These important sites are in the town of St Katherine, in the heart of South Sinai, a one and a half hour's drive from Dahab. After climbing 'The Moses Mountain', you are rewarded with a breathtaking view and the famous sunrise at the summit of Sinai's highest peak… an experience not to be missed whilst in Sinai!
The landscape and wildlife of South Sinai are unique. Inland, the dramatic mountains of the desert shelter rare plants and animals and off the coast are some of the most beautiful coral reefs in the world. South Sinai's shores run into the Red Sea, and tourists come year-round to view the spectacular marine life and abundance of corals.
Dahab is one of the Red Sea´s oldest diving resorts and hosts some of the most spectacular and challenging dive sites in Egypt. It is now just as popular as a budget holiday resort location for those who simply want to relax and get some sun, however with camel safaris, snorkelling trips, quad biking, horse riding, wind and kite surfing, trips to Mount Sinai and desert excursions to name a few activities, there's plenty to keep you occupied too.
Named after the Arabic word for gold, Dahab borders the Gulf of Aqaba, and is an hour's drive through spectacular desert from the airport in the more commercial resort of Sharm el-Sheikh. But the vibe in Dahab is very different. The village is a small, vibrant mix of cultures populated with white-robed Bedouin and their brightly adorned camels, the women swathed in black and the children, multicoloured and mischievous, are always ready to strike up a deal for a bracelet or two. Egyptian traders and shopkeepers sell their crafts, food and wares to the growing number of holiday makers who are enjoying Dahab's friendly, personal vibe.
The bars and cafes almost hover over the water of the bay, where there are plenty of places to eat and relax after a day at play round the pool or in the sea. If you feel like a party, there are a few lively bars in town worth a visit that can keep you up all night.
