The Upper Austria/Salzkammergut region

Located in the heart of the Salzkammergut ( the Austrian Lake District) with beautiful alpine scenery framed by deep blue glacial lakes. The lakes are safe and popular with summer bathers. Gosau is situated one hour's drive from beautiful Salzburg, birthplace of Mozart and more latterly renowned for its connection with the Sound of Music.
Nearby can be found the stunning village of Hallstatt which is a World Heritage Site. Travel by cable car up to the oldest salt mines in the world. Slide down the largest miners' slide in the world! A fun day out for all the family!
There are boundless opportunities for hiking in the region. Please contact us for recommendations (too numerous to mention here!) Take the cable car up to the Zwieselalm. There you can enjoy delicious home-made refreshments in a traditional style, wooden hut and soak up some sunshine on one of the numerous balconies. There are numerous sign-posted trails from the Zwieselalm. The lower Gosau lake is delightful. The water is crystal clear and is drinking water quality. In summer the surrounding mountains reflect in the water, and is safe for swimmimg. There is another smaller lake higher up. It takes about an hour and a half to get there, and there is a very picturesque mountain hut serving delicious regional specialities. You will often come across grazing cattle wearing traditional cow bells! The gentle sounds of the bells ringing are often the only sounds you will hear!
Obertraun is about 20 minutes' drive away. Here you can take a cable car up to the Giant Ice Cave which is well worth a visit. Concerts are organised there on certain summer evenings. The Mammoth Cave is another very popular visitor attraction. Down in the valley is a limestone cave which also welcomes many visitors each year.
The Krippenstein is another very popular family ski resort (20 minutes or so from Gosau). Do not forget to visit the husky dogs, and in summer you can visit the "5 Fingers" glass viewing platform, if you dare! There are all sorts of lovely walks from the Krippenstein too. Gosau really is in the ideal situation, with 2 ski resorts literally on the doorstep and limitless opportunities for hiking in the summer!

There is a brand new outdoor water park in Russbach which is about 15 minutes' drive from Gosau. In Bad Goisern, there is an olympic toboggan run which can be used free of charge throughout the winter.
Vienna can be reached by car in approximately three hours. The Wachau (wine producing area) is around 2 hours away.
The spa town of Bad Ischl (25 minutes by car) is an attractive holiday destination with many shops, theatre etc. Music festivals are held in the town each summer. There are numerous open air bands and concerts in the area during the summer months. The area is also famous for its wonderful Christmas markets, from the beginning of December.
The local tourist office in Gosau arranges a weekly programme of events for visitors.

Dachstein West area

The village of Gosau is situated within a hanging valley at an altitude of 3000 feet. It is picture postcard perfect. The nearby mountains rise to approximately 10 000 feet. This provides excellent skiing facilities with links to the other valleys of the Dachstein west as well as wonderful summer hiking. There are numerous low level and mountain trails which lead, for example, to the Upper and Lower Gosau lakes. January sees the Balloon Week in Gosau with many night flights by hot air balloons. Skiing cometitions are held throughout the winter.

Gosau is perfect for mountain biking with cycle hire available in the village. Trout fishing available in the valley too. There is a variety of facilities in the village such as a supermarket, banks, a tourist information office, gift shops, a bakery, doctor, banks with cash point machines and numerous cares and inns serving traditional, regional food specialities. They often organise evenings of traditional music and dance.

How to get there

There are several budget airlines which fly to Salzburg and Linz eg Thomsonfly from Coventry and Ryanair from Stansted or Flybe from Birmingham. Sky Europe now fly from Manchester to Bratislava, which is a short drive from Vienna. Total driving time from Bratislava to Gosau is around 4 hours. Car hire is easy from all international airports, and we would be happy to give you a list of personal recommendations! We have also flown with KLM to Amsterdam and then onwards to Munich. This is of course a beautiful city perhaps worth exploring before you continue your journey down through scenic Bavaria to Gosau! The nearest railway station is 10km away at Steeg/Gosau. There is a bus service from Salzburg to Bad Ischl. Here you change for a bus connection to Gosau. A taxi is of course another option. Some of guests have chosen the taxi option, especially in the winter months as there is a free bus service in Gosau for skiers, and a car would otherwise not be needed.
