About this location
The Upper Austria region
Alpendorf is near to Annaberg-Im-Lammertal in the Salzburger Dolomiten, in the Dachstein-West ski region. For skiing, the 3 villages of Gosau - Russbach - Annaberg are fully linked, with most of the skiing on the Zweiselalm (1620m), Edtalm, and Hornsplitz. Hoher Dachstein (3004 m) dominates the area. Although Dachstein is not the highest peak in Austria, the view of Dachstein towering over the Gosausee with the Bichofsmutze in the background is one of the most famous views in the alps.
Alpendorf (meaning "mountain village") is near to Annaberg-Im-Lammertal. The Lammertal valley is named after the Lammer River, and the local ski area is generally referred to as Lammertal Dachstein-West. Lammertal Dachstein-West has a reputation for being one of the most family friendly resorts in Austria. If you are looking for extensive night life, bars and discos, this is not the resort for you!!
In Summer, Dachstein-West and the Lammertal Valley is a hikers and bikers paradise. There are a vast range of summer activities including:
Hiking: rated as a "top ten" destination, with over 300 marked trails;
There are over 300 lakes and over 100 waterfalls in the region;
Numerous swimming lakes / water-parks;
Gentler walking: experience the Mountain Flower Path on the Postalm, Austria's highest plateau, or take a tour of the oldest "primeval" trees in Austria (St Martin), or make your way up to the 5 finger lookout which is located near the Dachstein Glacier at 2,700 m;
Runnning: there are 45 marked trails from 1 km upwards;
Mountain biking: numerous routes of varying length and ease.
There is also a wealth of Summer tourist attractions within easy reach of Alpendorf. Annaberg is at the centre of the "Salzburg 7" - including castles, palaces, waterfalls, gorges, and caves. In Summer there is a weekly newpaper listing of events. The Salzburgerland Card provides discounts to over 190 attractions.
Larger supermarkets and banks can be found in Annaberg: Konsum - (5 minutes by car); Abtenau: 2 Spar shops, one of which is reasonably large - (10 minutes by car) and Billa (also a supermarket).
Note: nearly all local shops are closed on Sundays, including banks which tend to have their cash-points inside. Some, but not all, cashcards will gain entrance to the bank outside normal hours.
