'Casa della Mora' is set in the heart of the Salento countryside, a wonderfully rustic and timeless part of Puglia in the deep south of Italy. The villa is extremely well-appointed, with modern facilities throughout and a huge terrace surrounding the entire property, ideal for eating, relaxing and sunbathing. There are solar panels for unlimited hot water in summer and the whole villa has been insulated to keep it pleasantly cool even during the hottest months. We have a hectare of land with olive groves, fruit trees and a vineyard, and we are developing a garden with lawn and local flora. A swimming pool with its own dedicated terrace but will be available for guests' exclusive and private use from 2014. The villa is peaceful and secluded, with the owners living only 100m away and always on hand to provide any advice or assistance.

We are conveniently located in the middle of the Salento region, 20 minutes from the nearest beach and within striking distance of the entire peninsula. Salento has remained unchanged for generations: it is covered with thousands of acres of olive trees, has historic towns and villages, a spectacular coastal road, and countless beaches and coves. Although popular with Italian holidaymakers, it is seldom visited by foreign tourists and the locals will invariably give you a warm welcome. We are also less than half an hour from the wonderful Baroque city of Lecce, probably one of the most beautiful, atmospheric and yet least-visited of major Italian cities.

A holiday in Salento is ideal for people who enjoy beach life, or exploring little-known corners of the Mediterranean - or just want to relax in comfort, soaking up the summer sun.

The Puglia/Molise region

Puglia is a large, rural region making up the 'heel' of Italy. Hot and dry in the summer, mild and wet in the winter, and flatter than other parts of the peninsula, Puglia is Italy's bread-basket. It produces 80 per cent of Europe's pasta, more olive oil than the rest of Italy combined, and more wine than the whole of Germany. It's cuisine is based on fish and vegetables and epitomises the healthy Mediterranean diet – eating and drinking is taken very seriously by local people, and is one of the principal pleasures of any visit to the region.

Just to the north of Brindisi, and less than 2 hours' drive away, is the remarkable Trulli region. These mysterious conical buildings dominate the area, and provide a stunning townscape in the town of Alberobello, a UNESCO world heritage site. Also within easy reach on a day trip are the lovely Baroque town of Martina Franca, and the 'white city' of Ostuni, a stunning hilltop village.

Cutrofiano

The villa is situated in the province of Salento, the south-easternmost region of Italy and surrounded by the Adriatic to the east and the Ionian to the west. The coastline is within easy reach and is exceptional, with every kind of seascape from small rocky coves to long sandy beaches. During July and August, the northern Italians arrive – often staying in the same apartment year after year – and suddenly the coastline is buzzing day and night, transformed by the Italians' love of sun, sea and sand.

Inland, the summer evenings are filled with festivals – sometimes there seems to be a 'festa' every evening, with fireworks and partying late into the night. One to catch is the 'Tarantella' festival, featuring a series of performances of this energetic and mysterious local dance, accompanied by the increasingly popular 'pizzica' music. Other festivals include 'Le Sagre' during August, celebrating local food and cuisine. And not to be forgotten are the weekly food markets with their fresh, cheap, locally produced fruit and veg - some of it little known outside the region. There are innumerable restaurants, often with no menu, where you will be presented with an extraordinary range of dishes and courses at very reasonable prices.

Salento has a strong Greek flavour from its time as part of the Byzantine Empire – in some towns a Greek dialect is still spoken. The 'contadini' (local landworkers) still eke out a living on their smallholdings as their parents and grandfathers did before them. There are dozens of attractive local towns, such as Otranto and Gallipoli, all with charming historic centres. 30 minutes away is Lecce, a Baroque gem of a city with extraordinary church facades and a relaxed and laid-back cafe culture and nightlife.

Our local town of Cutrofiano is renowned for its traditional pottery production. It has numerous bars, cafes and restaurants - including a recently restored farmhouse with an outdoor swimming pool and trattoria. Five minutes from town is a Spa resort for those who prefer intensive pampering. The list of things to do and discover is endless.

"Lovely villa half an hour from host of wonderful beaches."

Immaculate villa, furnished to a high standard with thoughtful touches - useful selection of books, great films to watch on TV, plentiful olive oil from owner's trees. Kitchen really well-equipped, two lovely shower rooms, very comfy mattress. The loggia / veranda is huge and provides much-needed shade for outdoor eating. Bill and Tracey were friendly and helpful but utterly discreet. They clearly wanted us to enjoy our stay and even provided beach towels.
A very quiet, rural spot - olive groves in all directions - so you need a car. Fabulous beaches and clean blue water half an hour's drive. We explored a different one almost every one of our 12 days and were never disappointed. This was close season, though, and we had them to ourselves. Weather was great throughout!
Lecce was the only real tourist hotspot we visited and it is a gem. We enjoyed the ancient and more discreet charms of the small towns - like Specchia - and villages with their faded grandeur, local life carrying on quite unselfconsciously in piazzas and quiet backstreets. Bill had some good places to recommend.

"A little piece of heaven"

The accommodation was everything we'd hoped for, well designed and very well equipped. The owners, Bill and Tracy, were always keen to help but never intrusive. They have obviously put a lot of time and effort into creating such a comfortable place to stay.

The location of the house is ideal for trips out to the coast in all directions, and to visit historic centres of many towns - we particularly liked finding churches with frescoes in Galatina (Santa Caterina d'Alessandria) and Soleto (San Stefano) and having a drink in the Piazza Salandra in Nardo.

Staying in the Salento region feels like being in the real Italy. The local people are friendy and willing to help, even though few speak any English. With Bill's help, we managed to order and collect a Friday-night takeaway of traditional local food to eat at the house, cooked for us by Cristina, of L'Antica Dispensa in Cutrofiano.

The WiFi, and ability to catch up with some recent films, after many happy days out was an unexpected bonus.

We loved it here.

"Beautiful and charming property in the most peaceful surroundings"

This property is immaculately decorated with so much warmth and charm. Great attention to detail has been given, making this an exceptional property to stay in.

Even in the August heat, the property was cool and the external areas are perfect for dining or simply relaxing taking in the beautiful countryside location.

The owner Bill, who is extremely kind, was there to help us with anything that we needed and there is an extensive list of things to eat, see and do in surrounding areas.

I would highly recommend this property, it is a true gem!

"Excellent accommodation and very friendly/helpful owners"

We stayed for a week in Casa Della Mora and thoroughly enjoyed our time there. The villa is fantastic, fully equipped with everything you need and very homely too. It was spotlessly clean with 2 lovely shower rooms, 2 bedrooms and an open plan lounge/kitchen/dining room. An added bonus is the outside space too, with a lovely covered terrace/patio area that was great for dining outdoors with family. One thing I didnt realise when I booked the villa was that it also had WIFI so that was great for keeping in touch and for researching local attractions etc.

Lastly I would like to give a special mention to the owners (they live about 100 metres from the villa), what a lovely family, they really could not have been more helpful and considerate. (they even provided us some supplies for our arrival, wine, milk, bread etc). It's these kind of details that are important when you are travelling with young children.

Overall I would have no hesitation in recommending this accommodation, and equally I wouldn't hesitate to stay there again.

"Super maison au milieu des oliveraies"

We had a very pleasant stay in this charming house. It is very comfortable, well decorated and perfectly equipped. There are big efficient fans in every room, not noisy at all. The wifi access works perfectly.
This property is surrounded by olive trees and you can find a large variety of fruit trees in the garden.
The situation is ideal, it is very quiet and close to main roads.
The owners, an English couple who live next door, are very welcoming, they have prepared a full book of information on the region.
This is the place to be if you wish to relax and visit places that foreign tourists have not yet discovered.

"one of the best holidays i had"

First, the house is exactly and even better than on the photos, we have been surprised in the good way to find such a comfortable house, just read other review, it's really true! No need to repeat what wonderfull evening you can have on the patio, it's like you imagine when looking at the photos.
It's modern, full equiped so you feel like at home, and for an excellent price, no need to bring extra stuff, everything is there.
We would return without any hesitation for our next stay.
The house Keeper, was just great, present to help if we had questions or any need.

Regarding the Salento area itself, this isTHE place i wanted to show to my patner in life, hot , not a single day with rain, blue sky during 2 weeks, welcoming native poeple, while you get lost and ask for help, you'll be invited to share dinner with them! it's only in Salento i could find such nice poeple, exactly like in my souvenirs, 20 years ago.

One of the nicest place to go in the evening, is Gallipoli, with it's old island city, but also what they call the new Gallipoli, extenstion of the Island, where even in the night you can eat, do shopping, have a drink / ice cream, local snacks.
Old and New city : excellent.
Plus Bill provide a nice guide of the area with good restaurants pretty close to the house.
Still keep in mind you will need to use the car to go anywhere.

And let's not forgot about the beaches, with Bill's house you have the advantage to sleep at campaign side, and be 20 minutes away (by car) from the first nicest beaches.
No need to go far to find a lot of nice beaches and unspoilt!

So as a conclusion, Casa della mora should be on top of your list, It will become popular, so let's hope it can be free when you want to go ;)

"Beautiful modern villa in the Puglian countryside"

We had a wonderful time in this lovely rural house in Salento. The hosts, who live next door, made us feel very special and welcome and gave us really good local information - the best beaches, restaurants and things to do. The house was just the right size for our family and was in beautiful, peaceful surroundings but easily accessible to the pretty, small town, just a 5 min drive away and only 30 mins to some great, unspoilt beaches.

"A wonderful, truly memorable experience!"

If you can imagine sitting drinking great wine on a fabulous patio looking out over the gorgeous countryside of Puglia, watching the sun go down after a day sunbathing at the local beach then Casa della Mora is for you! This is a fantastic 2 bedroom property in a beautiful rural setting run by 2 wonderful people and their gorgeous kids. Our stay in May co-incided with a gloriously sunny week so we made good use of the covered patio that kept us cool during the day and provided a wonderful setting for dinner of an evening. The villa is ideally situated for discovering the many beaches near by or for promenading around the local town of Cutrofiano or perhaps an evening stroll around Lecce, Gallipoli or Otranto.

The villa is light, airy and mixes modern touches with old world charm - in short, delightful! The facilities are excellent - modern kitchen and bathroom, comfortable beds, stylish furniture, stuning patio - all set in surrounding gardens being developed by the owners. Neither my friend nor I could fault this newly rennovated villa and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The owners, an English couple and their young family, were very welcoming and made our visit there one to remember.

This villa is a real gem in the heart of the beautiful region of Puglia and provides exceptional value for money! We did not want to leave at the end of our week and will definitely be back! If you are after the most fantastic, memorable, true taste of Puglia experience then a stay at Casa della Mora should be top of your list!
