2015 is of course the Open Golf at St Andrews year, and our summer calendar is already filling up. The Open Golf dates went long ago, but other dates are disappearing fast, so, if you would like to come and stay in Garden Cottage, please don't delay! We are happy to make short breaks available throughout the year. Please get in touch soon.
Garden Cottage is situated in the heart of our country estate in Fife, about 9 miles from St Andrews and its many golf courses, and the cottage sleeps 4 plus baby or small child..
The cottage is detached, two storey, and sits in its own garden, with a lawn to the front, and grass at the back, with woodlands at the side. It is set on a private road, which is only used by cottage guests, and the very occasional tractor working on the estate.
Inside the cottage has a sitting room, dining room, kitchen and cloakroom with toilet on the ground floor, and upstairs, there is a bathroom with showerbath and new power shower, and 2 bedrooms - one with a double bed, the other with 2 twin beds. There is also a full size cot.We can also supply a futon bed, for a small extra charge.
For each booking, we provide a welcome pack which will contain a selection of groceries to get you started, and we will provide a 'goodie bag' for children aged 3-12. you will also find some toys, games and DVDs in the cottage, to keep the children amused. Please make sure you tell us your children's ages when you book.
The sitting room is particularly comfortable and cosy, especially when the open fire is burning brightly. It does make such a difference to any room, although even when the fire is not on, the sitting-room has a lovely 'feel' to it. Maybe it is the light from the double aspect windows, or the high ceiling, but it is a very relaxing room, and lends itself beautifully to just chilling out. There is also a free-sat TV, and docking station, as well as BT Infinity wi-fi, which is free and unlimited. The cottage also has full central heating. The dining room can easily accommodate 4 or even 6 at the table, and there is also a piano, for the musically gifted!
The bedrooms are snug and traditional, with sloping eaves, dormer and velux windows in both bedrooms, and beautiful timber beds, deep toppers on each bed, and cosy duvets. Even when the weather is not so nice, there is something very comforting about hearing the rain on the velux, while you are warm as toast in bed. When the weather is good ( and it is good surprisingly often!) it's amazing to the leave the velux blind open, and gaze up at the stars.
The kitchen is fully equipped with a cooker, fridge, freezer, dishwasher, washing machine/tumble dryer and microwave.
Outside the garden is stocked with flowers. The woodland and adjacent stream are often visited by deer, especially in the early morning, and as the kitchen overlooks the woods, you might be lucky enough to see a deer while you make your morning tea.
The garden is great for children to play. It has a Little Tikes Slides, and plenty of room to kick a football, or ride bikes. There are no neighbours close enough to be troubled by boisterous games.
In front of the cottage, is an open grassy area, beside our duck pond, which has many wild ducks. In the spring, there are also many ducklings, swimming in line behind their mothers. We are also regularly visited by Harry the Heron, and very occasionally, by otters.
On the estate, we breed Highland Cattle, the long-horned traditional Scottish cattle. They are very beautiful and can been seen on the farm at all ages - from the newly born calves to the mature cattle.
In May, we host the Fife Agricultural Show in some of our fields. This is far enough away from the cottage that you will hardly notice it, but if you want to visit, there is lots to see and do, with show jumping, cattle, sheep and horse shows, as well as all sorts of traditional Scottish exhibitions and displays.
Near to our house, about 100 yards from the cottage, is our tennis court, and guests are welcome to enjoy it. If you don't have rackets with you, we'll be happy to lend you some.
Further afield, there is so much to see and explore in Fife. The Open Golf comes to St Andrews regularly, and is back again in July 2015. St Andrews itself has much to see, from St Rules Tower, the Castle and the other historic areas. On the Fife Coast, there are the pretty East Neuk villages, such as Anstruther, and Pittenweem, and the Pittenweem Art Festival is not to be missed. Edinburgh is only an hour away by train or car, with the Edinburgh Festival in August, and so many sights and shops to see and visit. With every booking, we are delighted to send you a list of things to do, places to go, and local shops and restaurants to visit. We hope you will find this helpful.

Garden Cottage is comfortable and cosy, with central heating throughout for the cooler months. The beds are hand made from timber grown on the estate. There is a large open fire in the sitting room, just right when the weather is perhaps a little inclement.
There is one full bathroom upstairs and a cloakroom with toilet and wash basin downstairs. ( This website can't distinguish between full bathroom, and separate WC, so shown as 1 bathroom, but in fact it is 1.5) Heating is provided on a timed basis, usually 10 hours per day, unless the weather is particularly cold, in which case we are happy to extend it.
|Further details outdoors|
Garden Cottage is situated on its own overlooking our duck pond. A small burn (stream) runs through the woods beside the cottage. There is plenty of wildlife to see. Deer are often seen in the woods, and pheasants are regular visitors. Foxes can be heard at night. On the pond we have lots of ducks, and Harry the Heron is usually there too. We have some beautiful hens and bantams which, if they are in the right mood, lay eggs which we can sell you, fresh from the hen house. There is also a tennis court available for guests use, free of charge, by arrangement. Kinloss Farm is a working farm, and we breed pedigree Highland Cattle. From March onwards, the calves are born, and look very beautiful.
For all bookings we supply a welcome pack, the contents of which will vary from time to time.
We try to be flexible about dates for your holiday, and are happy to make short breaks available at any time of year, so please ask.
Arrival time is 4pm or after, and guests are asked to leave by 10am. We look forward to hearing from you!
About this location
The Fife region
The Kingdom of Fife is full of history and interesting places. St Andrews, the home of golf, is only 9 miles away. St Andrews is a lovely place to visit. There is an historic castle, beautiful beaches and the world famous University. The East Neuk of Fife is famous for its fishing villages and lovely beaches. Edinburgh is only an hour away, Perth about 40 minutes away, and Dundee is only 15 minutes away over the River Tay. For golfers, Fife has many golf courses. Cupar itself has two, and there are 5 or 6 in St Andrews, before you even start thinking about Carnoustie, Perth, and even Gleneagles.
Cupar is the old market town of Fife. There is still a Farmer's Market once a month, where local farmers sell their produce. Fife Show is held on our farm in May each year, and is a great spectacle. It is however on the other side of the farm from Garden Cottage, and it is possible to completely ignore it, if you prefer not to participate. There are many historic places to visit, such as Falkland Palace, and other National Trust properties.

"Lovely setting, poor facilities."
The cottage is quite lovely and set in great surroundings. However the heating and the shower facility are very poor.Middle of winter and the heating comes on twice per day 6.30am to 10.30 am and 4.00… More
I'm so sorry that you didn't enjoy your stay. I do try to make all options for heating entirely clear and fair. Timed heating is included, with the option of extending this if required, for basically what it costs me to provide it. In addition to the central heating, unlimited use of electric heaters is provided, as well as a starter pack of coal, and unlimited logs for the open fire. It is winter time in Scotland, and it can be cold, but if the heating options are used, ie heaters and fire, this is a very snug little cottage. If you had told me at the time that you were having problems, I would undoubtedly have assisted. The shower is not a problem that has ever been mentioned before, and I will investigate. Again, if the issue had been raised at the time, I would have looked into it to see if there was a problem. We do take our guests comfort very seriously, and I am disappointed that you didn't give me the chance at the time to make your stay enjoyable. It is definitely not a 5* luxury hotel, but it is a very comfortable little cottage, as all our other guests confirm in our guest book.
