The Provence Alpes Cote d'Azur / Vaucluse region

The 'Pays d'Aigues', just south of the Grand Luberon mountain and north of the Durance valley, is so named because of its pride in the availability of water, which has been important for farming in the area. Like the rest of Provence, vines and olives, fruit and vegetables are grown and this together with indigenous plants from the herbs of the 'Garrigue' to umbrella pines and truffle oaks, gives the region its distinctive character. With a climate of almost constant sunshine and a clear sky, artists , such as Cezanne and Van Gogh, were inspired to create their wonderful landscape paintings.
The delightful hilltop villages once gave protection from pirate plunderers from the coast but now glow in the summer heat, with golden stone and terracotta roofs. Remnants of the past, from prehistoric forts to Roman amphitheatres, from Avignon's Papal Palace to Aix's Cours Mirabeau impress. Very good road links mean that visitors could access an exciting range of holiday spots, from the Alps to the Cote d'Azur and from the famous Pont du Gard to the dramatic Gorge de Verdon.
The Cucuron area
Cucuron is a lively village where it is delightful to sit in the shade of plane trees beside its large pond enjoying a coffee or a glass of rose wine. The wine cave offers a range of wines, though the vineyards of Lourmarin, La Tour d'Aigues and Bonnieux are well worth a visit too. Cucuron also offers several good restaurants and is home to 'La Petite Maison de Cucuron'. This medieval village has 13th century ramparts, gates and towers as well as a working olive oil mill, a museum and lovely old church, where a traditional 'May Tree' ceremony takes place.
It is worth exploring the pretty local villages: Ansouis with its castle, until very recently home to the Dukes of Sabran Ponteres, la Tour d'Aigues and Lourmarin, one of the most beautiful villages in France, with a Renaissance castle, art galleries and where celebrated writers, Camus and Bosco were buried. The bustling small town of Pertuis, with its thriving Friday market or its hypermarket is only ten minutes by car. There is a Big Band and Jazz Festival in the summer with concerts in local towns, villages and vineyards. A short journey by car takes you to the lavender fields on the northern slopes of the Luberon or to the 'Colorado of Provence' near Apt. Hiking and climbing, bird watching or star gazing are possible pastimes and there is a golf course at Pont Royal.
