The West Country / Devon region
The South West has arguably some of the most dramatic and enchanting scenery in England. North Devon is proud to boast its rugged coastlines, clean sandy beaches, wide estuaries and a particularly intense clear estuary light, green countryside, wooded valleys and open moorlands. Walk the coastal path, cycle ride the Tarka Trail or across the moor, fish in the many rivers or open seas, horse-ride along the beach or across Exmoor, surf, sail, wind-surf, kite-surf or just build your castle in the sand!
So if you are looking to get away from it all and relax or to be active and explore, there is always something to suit all of the family in North Devon.
Wander around traditional fishing villages or along sandy beaches. Explore unspoilt landscapes and a wealth of attractions. Unwind at a spa or get active and try one of the water-sports in Devon. Many attractions have special offers and free events and there are so many natural playgrounds including Exmoor, Dartmoor, and, on your doorstep, the coast.
A short walk away from the beautiful sandy beach and National Trust headland of Baggy Point, a couple of minutes by car from Saunton Sands, Putsborough and Woolacombe beaches. The North Devon surfer's Mecca of Croyde with its family friendly golden shore replete with cafe, shop and showers, offers both surfing and riding schools. The area has spectacular scenery to rival any found within the UK and boasts coastal and inland walks to satisfy walkers of all levels of ability. Golfing enthusiasts are well catered for with several excellent courses within "driving range", notably the famous Saunton Sands Club. Other attractions include boat/fishing hire and ferries to Lundy from Ilfracombe, several adventure/theme parks nearby, Watermouth Castle, Arlington Court and a little further The Big Sheep at Abbotsham and The Milky Way at Clovelly.
The Croyde / Georgeham area
Georgeham is perfectly situated for sporting expeditions to the great surfing beaches of Croyde Bay, Saunton Sands, Putsborough and Woolacombe. And after a busy day on the sand and surf you can quench your thirst at one of Georgeham's delightful village pubs, where good food and a warm welcome are guaranteed. Surrounded by miles of walks, bridleways and cycle routes, with the amazing Braunton Burrows close by and the Exmoor National Park an easy drive away, Georgeham is the ideal base for all types of holiday.
Nearby Croyde is not only the renowned surf capital of the West Country but is also a beautiful quaint village of unique charm and character with its thatched cottages, rolling hills and the pretty stream that winds its way through to the idyllic sandy beach. The area surrounding Croyde is the perfect place for the outdoor adventurer with Baggy Point close by offering spectacular walks around the cliffs as well as specialised rock climbing. The Goldcoast Festival is held each year on the headland overlooking the beach with large stage and major music entertainment including Jason Moraz in 2009 and acts such as The Magic Numbers and Joshua Radin lined up for 2010, it includes countless sporting competitions. There is tuition available for surfing and numerous other water sports.
The more energetic can surf down at Putsborough (surf board hire & lessons can be organised just let us know) whilst those of a more gentle dis position can take a leisurely stroll along the Pickwell footpath, down through the sand dunes along the beach to Woolacombe where they can relax and lunch in one of the many continental style bistro's, peruse the surf shops or perhaps play crazy golf! Putsborough Beach with its three miles of golden sands extending to Woolacombe, Recently voted 7th best beach in the world, the long sweeping sands of Putsborough are renowned for their cleanliness and beauty. Generally uncommercialised, there is a small beach café, ample parking, a toilet block.
Nearby Croyde provides a pleasant alternative venue to explore. With its fabulous surfing beach, the famous Thatch (great hot chocolate!), Billy Budd's & The Manor Public Houses, a variety of surf shops, bistros and ice cream parlours it provides an entertaining excursion which all the family can enjoy. Georgeham is home to the renowned Rock Inn where gourmet meals can be enjoyed in its informal and relaxing atmosphere. Stroll through the narrow lanes admiring the many period cottages, thatched roofs and cottage gardens (including the former home of Henry Williamson, author of Tarka The Otter!) down to the traditional shop - the hub of the village! Croyde beach lies between the headlands of Baggy Point to the north and Saunton Down to the south. This is one of the most popular beaches in the South West for surfers, and there is also windsurfing, sailing and canoeing. The beach has a café/restaurant, toilets with facilities for disabled visitors, and disabled access to the beach. There is deckchair hire, surfboard hire, first-aid, lifeguards, and a lost child centre. The beach has a dog restricted area, pay car parking, and there are nearby shops and a wildlife reserve.
Golf can be enjoyed at Saunton where there are 2 championship courses with further courses at Ilfracombe, Woolacombe and Barnstaple.
A few miles inland is the bustling village of Braunton, where you will find many shops, cafes and the famous Squires fish and chip shop. Cycle hire facilities are also available to explore the Tarka Trail along the estuary, into Barnstaple and as far as Instow, Bideford and beyond.
