The West Country region

North Devon has an incredible diversity of lansdscapes: the beautiful golden surf beaches of Putsborough, Croyde, Woolacombe and Saunton are perfect for families and those into beach sports. And the cliffs in this area are some of the highest in Britain, rising to over 800' above the sea - really quite breathtaking. Then there's the lush green rolling countryside for which Devon is so famous ... and the deep wooded valleys around Lynton with ancient oaks and rivers tumbling over giant boulders. And of course we must mention the rugged wilderness of Exmoor - quite breathtaking in its desolation with stories of Lorna Doone and the terrifying brigands. Not forgetting the UNESCO World Heritage Site at Braunton Burrows, the fishing port of Appledore still landing locally caught fish and Ilfracombe, now boasting Damien Hirst's 65' sculpture, Verity.

The main 'county town' in Barnstaple with all the normal stores and supermarkets, as well as some smaller shops. And lots of visitor attractions for families - both the cultured (National Trust etc) and those for pure entertainment for children (Big Sheep to name but one of many)

The coastal villages are full of welcoming pubs, good food, and show a vibrant live music scene here in this part of the South West. Of course there is the traditional and original Devon Cream Tea (scone, cream, jam NOT as in Cornwall where it is scone, jam, cream) and lots of sea faring tales of pirates, smugglers and shipwrecks. Some may have been embellished through the ages, but they make captivating stories for both children and adults alike.

Places of interest in the region include:

- Lundy Island, a Pirates' hideaway in years gone by, now owned by The Landmark Trust. It is well serviced by day trip boats from Ilfracombe

- Clovelly: a world famous fishing village in North Devon, built into a cleft in a 400' high cliff. The cobbled street tumbles its way down past whitewashed cottages festooned with flowers to the tiny working port. It is famous for its donkeys, which traditionally carry goods up the hill; sledges bring things down. There are links with Charles Kingsley, Turner, Dickens and the Spanish Armada.

- National Trust's Arlington Court - a splendid regency house and gardens full of the Chichester's collections. Other properties in the region include Knightshayes and Killerton House.

- Panier Market and Butcher's Row, Barnstaple - a must visit for foodies.

- RHS Rosemoor - 65 acres of both formal and informal gardens - as well as woodland walks, water features and open spaces - there is something for children and adults alike to enjoy time and again.

- Dartington Crystal, Torrington - at the award winning visitor centre you can watch the live demonstration of glassmaking and try the many hands-on activities we have to offer, as well as seeing the museum collection. The shop has lots of tempting goodies.

Perrymans Cottage is set within the lovely picturesque village of Georgeham with it's narrow lanes, traditional cottages and abundant flowers. The village has a shop/post office, a church and two excellent pubs. The Rock serves great food and boats the best Sunday lunches in the area. The Kings Head has live music each week and also serves good food. Difficult choice really. Try both!

You can walk to Putsborough beach across the fields, or it's a 5 mins drive. There's a great cafe serving coffee, icecreams etc, as well as terrific lunches and early evening suppers. The renowned surf beach at Croyde is also only 5 minutes away, with Woolacombe and Saunton beaches just 10-15 mins.

There are numerous walks from the village connecting onto the coastal path, or head further inland for some amazing views of the sea and Devon's rolling countryside.

The next village is Croyde, a bustling, busy surf-style village with three pubs, including the famous Thatch, a village store/bakery, ice cream parlour, bistro and 4 surf shops. The Village Hall has a Deck Chair Cinema in the summer for all the classic films.

"Lovely Cottage with fabulous garden"

We had a lovely time at the cottage. Nine of us were quite happy for the week. It helped that the sun was glorious all week and we could enjoy the garden, which was great. The beds were comfortable… More

Thanks for all your nice comments about the cottage and five star rating overall. You certainly had a great week of glorious sunshine. And nice to know you'll be back. Just to pick up ref your comment on the seating in the lounge …. as you know, the cottage is quite a quirky, cosy place and the lounge is part of that. So you're right, we don't have formal seating/sofas for nine, but you could comfortably seat four on the two sofas, six if you're family or good friends and enjoy squidging up a bit together. Then there's the single rattan arm chair, plus floor cushions and the foot stool. Shazam! Room for nine, even if a bit unconventional. I'll see if we can sneak in another chair or two – we just didn't want to overload the room with furniture when we styled it. Hope that explains and makes it clear for everyone. See you again. Nick

"The perfect family getaway"

I recently stayed at Perryman's with my partner and my family and we all thought the cottage was very well equipped and catered for all our needs (including the toddlers). Nick was also very helpful and the kayaking was great fun. I would definitely recommend Perryman's for a group of adults or a family group like ours. Nice and close to the surf too!

I'm so pleased to hear you enjoyed yourselves and that the surf picked up for you all. See you again sometime. Best. Nick

We had the most 'perfect' week imaginable last summer when we stayed at Perryman's Cottage. When we arrived it was everything we had hoped it would be – and more! We were two families - four adults and 5 children (age range from 9 to 14yrs) and there was ample space for all and a very pretty garden (perfect for BBQ's). We were blessed with glorious sunshine all week and spent long balmy days on the nearby Putsborough Beach, body boarding, surfing and picnicking – it was heaven!! Also there were many scenic walks and fabulous pubs nearby. I have no hesitation in recommending this 'little piece of paradise'! Will definitely return - thank you!

"Love this cottage!"

Such a lovely stay at perrymans - it's just like home from home which is great when traveling with a young baby! The cottage is so cosy and comfortable I didn't want to go home. all our needs had been thought of from everything we needed for the baby, including high chair and a very comfortable travel cot for our little one, to a fantastic log burner for tired parents to relax in front of! An ideal location for beaches, great pubs and simply chilling out in wonderful fresh Devon sea air!
We will be back very soon to seek out more beauty spots of north Devon, as well as to simply enjoy the tranquility of Georgeham and Perrymans Cottage.

"It's my favourite place in the world!...."

....this is what my son keeps telling me about Devon and the charming cottage we rented during the holidays. Each weekend he questions when we are going to be returning to Perryman's Cottage. We all felt completely at home in this gorgeous, cosy cottage - spending the days playing in the beautiful garden or at the beach close by, the early evenings wining and dining in the delightful local pub (The Rock), and the nights cuddling up in front of the log fire. Such a perfect place for peace, relaxation and fun. We loved it!
