About the home

Pickwell Manor is a stunning period manor house set in the heart of the hamlet of Pickwell, within easy walking distance of Putsborough beach and a few minutes drive from the popular Croyde and Woolacombe beaches. On site there are 6 acres of wonderful gardens and grounds including an Italian garden, walled garden and areas of woodland. There is also a tennis court and a new games room.

The Manor has been sensitively converted into 10 apartments ranging from small unique conversions for 2 (such as the converted Chapel and Laundry) through to a range of 2 and 3 bedroom apartments suitable for families and friends. Please ask if you would like advise on which apartment might suit you best.

Liberty is a well equipped 2 bedroom apartment with a double room, a twin room, and a lounge diner with a double sofa bed if required.

The 'Liberty' apartment is situated in the west wing of the Manor which has a beautiful oak door which leads to a warm, bright and welcoming reception area which you are welcome to use throughout your stay. The apartment can be found on the first floor of the Manor where it has view towards the newly converted Chapel on one side of the apartment and the woodland on the west side of the Manor to the other.

As you enter the apartment you find a spacious and comfortable lounge / dining area on your right hand side - perfect for relaxing meals together and for socialising together. Continuing on the left is a well equipped and spacious kitchen which get the evening sun through the woods .

The apartment has two bedrooms which look out onto the back lawn of the Manor - one a double room and the other a spacious twin room (with additional room for a cot or additional Z bed if required). The apartment also has a double sofa bed in the lounge were it to be required.

The apartment has a large family bathroom with a bath with shower over. In addition to the interior space which the apartment affords there is also a large games room with table tennis, table football, a large selection of toys etc., a bike and surf board store and a laundry room. If you stay with us during the school summer holidays then we would also love you to join us in the Manor's ballroom for a Devon cream tea!

Situated within the ground of the Manor Liberty the advantage of provides a wonderful self contained apartment whilst also offering many advantages of being in a large Manor house which includes 6 acres of gardens that span the front of the house. These gardens include the sun terrace with its breathtaking sea view; the Italian garden with its croquet lawn; the tennis court and 2 beautiful woodland areas.

You are particularly welcome to use the terrace as a location for drinks, meals, reading or simply sitting back and taking in the view.

During school holidays the rental period is from Friday to Friday. Outside of school holiday both weekend and mid-week breaks are welcome (minimum 2 night stay)

Conditions

We ask for a 30% deposit on booking and then the balance 6 weeks in advance of your holiday. For bookings within 6 weeks of your arrrival date then full payment is requested. Payment can be made by bank transfer, cheque or debit card. It is also possible to pay by credit card but a 2.5% charge is added.

The West Country / Devon region

The North Devon coast provides a fantastic location for a holiday and Pickwell is the perfect base from which to explore the region. Situated on the ‘Golden Coast’ – an area of ‘Outstanding Natural Beauty’ Pickwell is a few minutes from the coastal path and benefits from breath taking country and sea views. Under an hour from the M5 it also benefits from being one of the most accessible coastal sections of the West Country.

There are a whole host of wonderful places to explore within easy reach by car from Pickwell Manor (or by bike for the more adventurous). We are just 25 minutes from the western section of Exmoor National Park. This is the location of one of favourite walks at Heddon's Mouth (it has everything pub, stream, woodland, beach). Also situated in this part of Exmoor are the historic villages of Lynton and Lynmouth linked by their famous water powered railway and then further north is the village of Dunster with its 11th Century castle which provides a great day out.

Heading inland along the estuary is the Tarka trail cycle path leading from the local village of Braunton through to the market town of Barnstaple and then on to Bideford and Torrington along the old disused North Devon railway network . The route passes through the largely unspoilt countryside as it was described by Henry Williamson in his classic novel ‘Tarka the Otter’.

Going south from Barnstaple where the Taw and Torridge rivers meet is the quaint fishing village of Appledore –known as much these days for its book festival as for its fascinating fishing heritage. Just the other side of Hartland Point is another famous fishing village, Clovelly. Pickwell Manor actually has a sea view looking out towards Hartland. From the gardens we also have a view out towards the island of Lundy - known for its rugged walks and its migratory birds. Day trips can be arranged from nearby Bideford or Ilfracombe.

The area has a number of beautiful National Trust properties including Arlington Court and at Torrington is Rosemoor one of the RHS's flagship gardens.

The Croyde / Georgeham area

At Pickwell we are completely spoilt with 4 amazing sandy beaches all within a short distance of the Manor. Croyde, Woolacombe, Saunton Sands and Putsborough are spectacular surfing beaches with beautiful golden sand and sand dunes. All the beaches have beach car parks if you don’t want to walk across the fields. From Putsborough you can follow the route of the breathtaking coastal path around Baggy Point to Croyde. As you reach Croyde Sandleigh Tea rooms are perfectly situated for a well earned rest and a cuppa or maybe a cream tea http://www.sandleigh.info/ . Alternatively you walk along the 2 miles of sands from Putsborough beach round to Woolacombe beach and back for a perfect afternoons walk.

The hamlet of Pickwell is also just a 10 minute walk to the village of Georgeham (once home to Henry Williamson). In addition to the well stocked village shop & post office its also boasts 2 fantastic pubs The Rock Inn www.therockgeorgeham.co.uk and the Kings Arms www.therockgeorgeham.co.uk. They give any Pickwell Manor guest fantastic dining opportunities on their doorstep. Then just slighly further afield Braunton, Woolacombe and Croyde all have a good selection of restaurants or why not take a trip to the nearby fishing port of Ilfracombe and try Damian Hurst's restaurant No 11 The Quay. If you fancy a dining experience a little more off the grid then you might want to consider the family run Mortehoe Shellfish restaurant just a 15 minute drive along the coast.

The area provides a wealth of opportunities for sporting adventure whether on or off the water. Surfing, kayaking, kite surfing, coasteering, sailing, sea fishing and diving can all be arranged from local beaches or ports. For those who prefer to stay on land then rock climbing, horse riding, cycling, running, mountain biking, shooting and quad biking are all ideal activities that can be pursued locally. For those keen on a round of golf we are less than 15 minutes from Saunton Golf Club - with two championship courses that are amongst the West Country's finest.

By Car - From Junction 27 of the M5 take the A361 to Barnstaple and then continue on this road to Braunton. At the traffic lights in Braunton take a left on the B3231 to Croyde and then on to Georgeham. Turn left at The Kings Arms pub in Georgeham (signposted for Putsborough). Then after half a mile turn right on a lane signposted for Pickwell. Turn in to the entrance to Pickwell Manor Farm which will be on your left and then proceed straight on to the entrance to Pickwell Manor.

By Train - Tiverton Parkway Station is just 1hr 55 minutes from London Paddington Station. From Tiverton it is just under an hour by taxi to Pickwell Manor. Alternatively change at Exeter station for trains to Barnstaple which are linked by bus to our local village of Georgeham or just 20 minutes by taxi.
