The Devon region

The Beaches of Croyde, Putsborough, Saunton & Woolacombe are all within easy reach. Croyde beach is only a 10 minute walk from Croyde Shores. All four beaches have the European Blue Flag award with local life guards patrolling.

On the north coast is the very picturesque villages of Lynton & Lynmouth. In Lynmouth there is a harbour, Cliff Railway, Rhenish Tower, boats and challenging surf. You can even fish for salmon and trout. There is a good selection of shops & restaurants

The tiny fishing village of Clovelly is a lovely cobbled fishing village which is secluded, but easy to find. The village is traffic free and the main street, known very simply as 'up-a-long' and 'down-a-long', tumbles its cobbled way down 400ft of solid rock to the tiny harbour and lifeboat station, both protected by an ancient stone breakwater. It is a descent past flower-strewn cottages, broken only by tempting little passageways and tiny winding lanes that lead off to either side and offer the prospect of discovering even more peaceful, picturesque treasures of Clovelly.

Breathtaking coastal scenery and fantastic walks can be found at Hartland Quay. There is a slipway leading to a sandy and rocky beach that is ideal for families, where you can swim in the sea, fish in the rock pools or just lie there and enjoy the sunshine. The Quay beach is safe for bathing and there are numerous exciting coves within walking and motoring distance.

The charming seaside village of Woolacombe with its three-mile long stretch of golden sand has won both the blue flag and Premier Seaside Beach awards for its cleanliness, water quality and facilities. Life guards ensure safe family swimming during the summer and surfers come from all over the country to enjoy the great waves and clean water. Woolacombe is a lively village with a variety of great pubs, restaurants and shops.

The elegant Victorian fishing town of Ilfracombe has lots to do and see Ilfracombe is a stunning coastal town with white washed houses, grand Victorian villas and terraces which climb over the Wilder Valley from its dramatic coastal scenery. It is a resort that also has a contemporary edge from its top class restaurants and galleries, to its theatre and night life. In summer the streets and promenade are alive with the colour from magnificent floral displays. The many pubs, restaurants and shops that surround the quay create a friendly continental atmosphere. It is from the harbour that boats leave to the magical Lundy Island.

Fun for all the family at The Milky Way Adventure Park. With adventure, live entertainment, education and even an alien encounter, it's a great day out for the whole family whatever the weather! The North Devon Bird of prey centre is one of the best examples in the UK

Come and experience our fun packed timetable at The Big Sheep which enables you to get close to the animals, from bottle-feeding the lambs to feeding friendly sheep. As a working farm you will get to see dog trials, duck trials and sheep shearing, and watch the world famous sheep race, complete with jockey! As well as pony rides there is also a horse-whispering show. 'Ewetopia' is a premier indoor playzone to take the biggest of kids - even dads! Special playzones for Under 5’s and under 2’s.

Squash, badminton, bowls, gym and various other activities are available at the North Devon Leisure Centre in Barnstaple.

Good Fishing can be had all around the coast of North Devon but particularly at Croyde, Ilfracombe, Fremington Quay, Bideford & Morte Point.

There is a four screen Cinema in Barnstaple showing all the latest films.

If it’s a night out at the Theatre that you want then go no further than Queens Theatre in Barnstaple or the Landmark Theatre in Ilfracombe.

Enjoy all the thrills, excitement and drama of kart racing at The North Devon Karting Centre on the outskirts of Barnstaple.

Croyde in North Devon which is a magical place, steeped in old-world charm and a delightful coastal community of colour-washed thatched cottages with a beautiful sandy bay. Croyde is said by many to be the best surfing beach in the UK, and there can be few villages in the country with such a perfect blend of picturesque charm and vibrant life!

The wide sheltered bay, with its long broad sweep of golden sands offers safe bathing and excellent surfing. The beach is privately owned and well kept, is patrolled by lifeguards between May and September and has the prestigious Seaside Award. The adjoining National Trust land at Baggy Point provides delightful walking with excellent views. Cycling, horse riding, golf and tennis are all available locally. There is a variety of pubs and restaurants all providing extensive menus, and several cafes to indulge yourself with a Devon cream tea.

In Croyde there are a variety of restaurants and pubs which all serve excellent food & drink. The best known are The Thatch, Billy Buds & The Manor which are all very family friendly. Billy Budds and The Manor both have children’s play areas. For a little more sophistication, maybe a special treat or occasion, both the Kittywell & Whiteleaf will not disappoint. If you just want to have a relaxed meal in the village then Hobbs could fit the bill

A few miles up the road in Georgeham you will find The Rock & The Kings Arms, both are popular family eating and drinking venues

If it’s just Fish & Chips that you want then Bay View Farm in the village is the place to go

Braunton also has a variety of restaurants, pubs and take a ways to suit all

There are two indoor Swimming Pools locally. Cascades at the Ruda Holiday Park in Croyde which is a fun pool with slides in a tropical theme. The Leisure Centre in Barnstaple has an Olympic sized pool for more traditional swimming.

There are a good selection of Golf Courses locally that will suit everyone. Saunton is a links with two 18 hole courses. Further 18 hole courses can be found at Ilfracombe, Westward Ho & Portmore which is just outside of Barnstaple.

Five minutes walk from Croyde Shores there is a Tennis Court at ‘Upover’ which is open to the public. More tennis courts are available at the Tarka Tennis Centre in Barnstaple.

Local Horse Riding is available at ‘Roylands Riding Stables’ which is only five minutes walk down the road.

"Terrible place to stay"

We booked this accomodation for 7 nights this october half term but only managed to stay 3 nights before we had to move to other accomodation because the sofas & bed are the most uncomfortable we have… More

Total Nightmare Guests

We are extremely sorry that these guests were unhappy with the accommodation, but weren't given the opportunity to rectify any of the issues they raised during their stay, as they made no attempt to contact us, until after their departure. We were therefore unaware of any problems until they had already moved into alternative accommodation.

Most of their issues, some of which were quite minor, could have been resolved very quickly. The cut-out switch on the lounge heater had tripped and our electrician re-set it within an hour of our telephone call. Their other complaints concerning the outside light not working, no pegs supplied and no smoke alarm, were actually incorrect.

Unfortunately, we would not have been able to replace the bed, however it is only a few years old and of very good quality. No other guests have complained about either this or the lounge furniture, which again, is only a couple of years old.

The small area of mould on the bathroom ceiling, which was about the size of a 50p piece, was caused by condensation, as previous guests had not opened the window to ventilate the room after showering. Our housekeeper had cleaned this off with a fungicidal cleaner and we can only assume that marks came back because the window in the bathroom had been kept shut.. Our housekeeper would have been more than happy to return and clean the area again for them, given the opportunity.

As far as the 'electrics being all extension leads', this is not the case. There are plenty of electrical sockets throughout the property and we only use extension leads when needed and these are supplied to the correct standard.

We felt that as we were not given the opportunity to rectify any of their issues before they left the property, it was unreasonable to expect a refund.. We would have considered giving them something as a compromise gesture, however, when we spoke with Mr Benson later that day, he was extremely offensive and abusive, to the extent that we had to notify the Police about his threats and the incident was logged.

Other guests that have stayed recently (2014) at Croyde Shores say:

'Lovely clean cottage, very homely and comfortable, in an excellent location with some great amenities within a 5 minute walk. Plenty of options to eat out without having to drive and also a post office and convenience store. A lovely southwest facing garden which was perfect to sit out in during the evening.'

'Great location, walking distance to beach pubs and shop. Lovely beach and walks. Quiet peaceful holiday cottage'

'We enjoyed our stay at Croyde Shores and the property is ideal for 2 people. The beach (if walking) is a little further away than we thought, if loaded up with beach items. The shops are within easy walking distance of the property and has 3 lovely pubs, restuarants and shops. No need to take the car'

'Property is small but very well equipped and maintained. It is tucked behind another property with access by small uphill driveway with Parking space at the top for one car it has a fairly secure sunny garden and small patio area with BBQ facility the nearest beach is 10 mins walk but has strong rip tide and dogs are not allowed between May/sept.'

"Great apartment in the centre of Croyde"

We had a lovely week staying in Croyde Shores during March 2013.

The apartment was very private, well maintained and clean with a separate entrance so that we could come and go as we pleased throughout the day. There was good parking for a car and the walk to the pubs and restaurants of Croyde only took a few minutes which was very convenient at the end of a long day!

We spent most of our time at Saunton Sands beach which is more suited to our level of surfing, which was only a 5 minutes drive away. However from the apartment there are also a few scenic short walks to Croyde beach which only took 10 minutes passing some lovely tea rooms serving very indulgent cream teas.

We thought the apartment was excellent value and would definitely recommend staying there to other holiday makers.
