The West Country region

The Beaches of Croyde, Putsborough, Saunton & Woolacombe are all within easy reach. Croyde beach is only a 10 minute walk from Braemar. All four beaches have the European Blue Flag award with local life guards patrolling.

On the north coast is the very picturesque villages of Lynton & Lynmouth. In Lynmouth there is a harbour, Cliff Railway, Rhenish Tower, boats and challenging surf. You can even fish for salmon and trout. There is a good selection of shops & restaurants

The tiny fishing village of Clovelly is a lovely cobbled fishing village which is secluded, but easy to find. The village is traffic free and the main street, known very simply as 'up-a-long' and 'down-a-long', tumbles its cobbled way down 400ft of solid rock to the tiny harbour and lifeboat station, both protected by an ancient stone breakwater. It is a descent past flower-strewn cottages, broken only by tempting little passageways and tiny winding lanes that lead off to either side and offer the prospect of discovering even more peaceful, picturesque treasures of Clovelly.

Breathtaking coastal scenery and fantastic walks can be found at Hartland Quay. There is a slipway leading to a sandy and rocky beach that is ideal for families, where you can swim in the sea, fish in the rock pools or just lie there and enjoy the sunshine. The Quay beach is safe for bathing and there are numerous exciting coves within walking and motoring distance.

The charming seaside village of Woolacombe with its three-mile long stretch of golden sand has won both the blue flag and Premier Seaside Beach awards for its cleanliness, water quality and facilities. Life guards ensure safe family swimming during the summer and surfers come from all over the country to enjoy the great waves and clean water. Woolacombe is a lively village with a variety of great pubs, restaurants and shops.

The elegant Victorian fishing town of Ilfracombe has lots to do and see Ilfracombe is a stunning coastal town with white washed houses, grand Victorian villas and terraces which climb over the Wilder Valley from its dramatic coastal scenery. It is a resort that also has a contemporary edge from its top class restaurants and galleries, to its theatre and night life. In summer the streets and promenade are alive with the colour from magnificent floral displays. The many pubs, restaurants and shops that surround the quay create a friendly continental atmosphere. It is from the harbour that boats leave to the magical Lundy Island.

Fun for all the family at The Milky Way Adventure Park. With adventure, live entertainment, education and even an alien encounter, it's a great day out for the whole family whatever the weather! The North Devon Bird of prey centre is one of the best examples in the UK

Come and experience our fun packed timetable at The Big Sheep which enables you to get close to the animals, from bottle-feeding the lambs to feeding friendly sheep. As a working farm you will get to see dog trials, duck trials and sheep shearing, and watch the world famous sheep race, complete with jockey! As well as pony rides there is also a horse-whispering show. 'Ewetopia' is a premier indoor playzone to take the biggest of kids - even dads! Special playzones for Under 5’s and under 2’s.

Squash, badminton, bowls, gym and various other activities are available at the North Devon Leisure Centre in Barnstaple.

Good Fishing can be had all around the coast of North Devon but particularly at Croyde, Ilfracombe, Fremington Quay, Bideford & Morte Point.

There is a four screen Cinema in Barnstaple showing all the latest films.

If it’s a night out at the Theatre that you want then go no further than Queens Theatre in Barnstaple or the Landmark Theatre in Ilfracombe.

Enjoy all the thrills, excitement and drama of kart racing at The North Devon Karting Centre on the outskirts of Barnstaple.

Croyde

Croyde in North Devon which is a magical place, steeped in old-world charm and a delightful coastal community of colour-washed thatched cottages with a beautiful sandy bay. Croyde is said by many to be the best surfing beach in the UK, and there can be few villages in the country with such a perfect blend of picturesque charm and vibrant life!

The wide sheltered bay, with its long broad sweep of golden sands offers safe bathing and excellent surfing. The beach is privately owned and well kept, is patrolled by lifeguards between May and September and has the prestigious Seaside Award. The adjoining National Trust land at Baggy Point provides delightful walking with excellent views. Cycling, horse riding, golf and tennis are all available locally. There is a variety of pubs and restaurants all providing extensive menus, and several cafes to indulge yourself with a Devon cream tea.

In Croyde there are a variety of restaurants and pubs which all serve excellent food & drink. The best known are The Thatch, Billy Buds & The Manor which are all very family friendly. Billy Budds and The Manor both have children’s play areas. For a little more sophistication, maybe a special treat or occasion, both the Kittywell & Whiteleaf will not disappoint. If you just want to have a relaxed meal in the village then Hobbs could fit the bill

A few miles up the road in Georgeham you will find The Rock & The Kings Arms, both are popular family eating and drinking venues

If it’s just Fish & Chips that you want then Bay View Farm in the village is the place to go

Braunton also has a variety of restaurants, pubs and take a ways to suit all

There are two indoor Swimming Pools locally. Cascades at the Ruda Holiday Park in Croyde which is a fun pool with slides in a tropical theme. The Leisure Centre in Barnstaple has an Olympic sized pool for more traditional swimming.

There are a good selection of Golf Courses locally that will suit everyone. Saunton is a links with two 18 hole courses. Further 18 hole courses can be found at Ilfracombe, Westward Ho & Portmore which is just outside of Barnstaple.

Five minutes walk from Braemar there is a Tennis Court at ‘Upover’ which is open to the public. More tennis courts are available at the Tarka Tennis Centre in Barnstaple.

Local Horse Riding is available at ‘Roylands Riding Stables’ which is only five minutes walk down the road.

"Such a disappointment"

Whilst Braemer is in a good location within Croyde, we were quite disappointed when we actually got into the property. Upon arrival we had to make an immediate trip to the supermarket to purchase the … More

Unfortunately we were also very disappointed when these particular guests left Braemar on Saturday 27th September 14. This is very unusual.

We kindly ask in our information folder for guests to leave the property in a 'clean and tidy state' nothing more than this, we feel this is fair enough. We also ask guests that if they make use of the bbq that we supply, new at the beginning of the season, if they could clean it prior to their departure to ensure that it is ready to be used by the new guests coming in, not an unreasonable request we would think.

The property is self-catering therefore it is not unusual that guests do have to supply items they will be consuming. We always supply a toilet roll, black bin liner, liner for the waste bins, tea towel (I think these particular guest took ours home) washing up sponge and tablets for both the dish washer and washing machine. We do not supply bath towels or hand towels which is identified in our web site and property details. Most guests that are not sure email us and ask before their arrival so that there is no misunderstanding.

The annexe next door is for 2 people only, the majority of which are quiet older guests. In the 16 years of renting the annexe we have not had one complaint regarding any noise coming from the annexe.

In our information folder we only ask for the property to be left in a 'clean and tidy state'. There are not endless details about how to clean the property and endless fines, this is a complete fabrication by these particular guests. We have only had praise about Braemar from previous guests on how clean it is and how we run it.

The report from my house keeper on the departure of these guests is detailed below. It took nearly an additional 2 hours to clean the property in readiness for our next guests arriving that afternoon.

“Braemar filthy! A whole black bin bag left in the porch full of dirty nappies and stinking. Fridge full of food, dishwasher full of plates on drainer. Floors filthy and blankets left in a heap. There was dried Weetabix up wall in the lounge and the bin was full in bathroom. The toilet was disgusting”

This I believe shows how dirty these guests were and the state that they left the property in. For this reason it took the extra time cleaning to ready for our incoming guests, it's therefore, we believe, not unreasonable to charge these guests £30.00 for the time and effort involved in this. Out of 22 week's worth of bookings at Braemar this year this is only the second time that we have had to make this charge. These guests made no effort at all to clean up after themselves but just to walk out of the door at the end of their holiday with no thought on the state of the property.

"Lovely cottage, Close to Croyde (great pub food) & close to 2 sandy beaches"

Lovely Cottage, spacious kitchen with patio leading into a nice little garden, very close to both the centre of Croyde (Highly recommend 'the thatch' for some gorgeous pub food) and near to two beaches- 10 minute walk to Croyde beach or a 20 minute walk/ 3 minute drive to the dog friendly half of the gorgeous sandy pitsbourgh sands.

We really enjoyed our stay here, everything was up to scratch, the Village of Croyde, whilst small, has a lovely feel to it and some great places to eat out. And the local beaches are excellent

"Lovely house and great location. Great for families with 3 or 4 children."

Our primary reason for booking this property was the fact the second bedroom slept up to four which meant our three children (6 & under) could all stay together whilst on holiday which was important. Not many properties we looked at offered this. I consider that I have pretty high standards when it comes to cleanliness, and could not fault the standard of the property on arrival. It is lovely and spacious with a beautiful garden & views. The only comment I would make is that the kitchen could do with updating but is still in full working order and has everything you need.

The location is right in the centre of Croyde Bay and the beach is walking distance. We did prefer Saunton Sands beach which is a short drive away. It is a great base for many days out and we can recommend Watermouth Castle and Exmoor zoo for young children.

We had no issues with service and the owners could be contacted easily via text message. The house was ideal for a family holiday, and we felt the layout was lovely with beautiful views from the kitchen table through patio doors. It is worth venturing out and visiting the surrounding areas as there are many lovley places in North Devon.

Overall a lovely holiday and no complaints.

"Lovely area, shame about the house"

The locksmith was arranged urgently to resolve the issue, unfortunately there was an internal communications error within the locksmiths company leading to a long delay in their arrival. Once they had arrived no problems could be found with the lock and all concluded that the guests has accidently locked themselves out.
The cleaner does a top notch job on all aspects of cleaning the property, we have only had praise on how clean and well presented the property is. We have guests return year after year because they are so pleased with not only the property but also the location. We can only assume that unfortunately the guests on this occasion had a bad experience during their stay which wasn't helped with locking themselves out.
