The West Country / Devon region

North Devon is a beautiful and unspoiled area of England. Its rugged coastline provides wonderful walking along the coastal path while sandy beaches such as Croyde, Woolacombe and Saunton offer hours of entertainment whether surfing, exploring rock pools or simply relaxing on the beach.
Braunton Burrows, just a few minutes drive from Croyde, is a fascinating area of sand dunes. Along with the surrounding coastline, the Burrows form part of Britain's first UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. It has an abundance of wild flowers, including many varieties of orchids - at their best in June and July. Guided walks are available in summer. The adjacent marsh and medieval Great Field are also worth exploring on foot or by cycle (or car.)
The Tarka Trail winds around the estuaries of the Taw and Torridge rivers following the journey taken by Tarka the otter in Henry Williamson's book. Much of it follows the line of an old railway line and the trail can be walked or cycled.
There is a good choice of golf courses nearby at Saunton Sands, Willingcott Valley, Mortehoe and Woolacombe. Slightly further afield are courses at Ilfracombe and Westward Ho! If you enjoy riding there is a riding stable in Croyde itself, also one in Woolacombe.
Surfing is, of course, one of Croyde's big attractions and you can learn to surf at one of the surf schools based at Croyde or Saunton Sands. If you prefer swimming in a pool there are leisure centres in Barnstaple and Ilfracombe and the Cascades pool at RUDA is open to non-residents. There is a small pool at the nearby Croyde Bay Holiday Resort available to visitors most times of year.
If you enjoy cycling the Tarka Trail is very popular. It begins in nearby Braunton, continues to Barnstaple, then on to Instow, Bideford, Torrington and beyond. There are a number of places where you can hire bikes of all kinds, including trailers for children to ride in. For adventurous cyclists there are more challenging routes up and down the Devon hills.
The nearby Victorian seaside town of Ilfracombe has a fishing harbour and boat trips are available to Lundy Island on the MS Oldenburg. Other places of interest are Lynton and Lynmouth, Exmoor, Clovelly and more. The list is endless!
For children there are a number of attractions such as the Big Sheep, Dinosaur Park, Watermouth Castle.
The Croyde area
Croyde is the quintessential West country seaside village with its classic thatched cottages and pub. Its sandy beach is famous for surfing but also very popular with families who can while away happy hours making sandcastles, exploring the rock pools and paddling in the sea. The dunes behind the beach shelter the village and also provide habitats for wildlife.
Facilities in the village include several pubs, cafes and restaurants, There is a post office, village stores and a variety of food and surf shops. Croyde Bay Holiday Resort (a short walk away) has a shop which sells newspapers and groceries and also has a restaurant which is open to the public.
Nearby along the coast path to the north is the National Trust area of Baggy Point, a favourite area for climbers and walkers. Following the coast path to the south leads around the headland to the lovely beach at Saunton Sands where you can enjoy a snack at the beachside cafe.
Regular music evenings are to be found in the village hall and local pubs. Croyde also hosts the annual Goldfest, a three day music festival held in June.

Oceanside is a comfortable modern house of a very high standard. It is fully equipped with everything you could expect and a few extra touches that should pleasantly surprise you. It is in a quiet location but well situated for the beach and village ammenities without being on top of either. With bus stops within a 100metres and half hourly buses its easy to get around our car remained parked on the drive all week. A trip to Barnstable is recommended. Walking on the local well marked footpaths reveals the local scenary at its best. With no shortage of good places to eat within walking distance its hard to fault Oceanside or Croyde. We went in mid Sept and there was still plently of life in the village so you might perhaps expect it to be very popular high season. |

Well thought out and presented, would definitely return. Many thoughtful and welcoming touches that you appreciate after a frustrating trip. House was immaculate, kitchen well provided for if you wanted to cook, it was in perfect position for both village and beach both easily walkable. We used as a 'home from home' as daughter was married at 'Tunnels Beaches' from 'Oceanside'. We actually booked this house for this reason and were absolutely delighted that it answered all our needs. As our daughter said it was just like being at home! Have already recommended to several friends. |

The house was lovely and well equipped with everything you need. It was well situated not too far from the beach and the village of Croyde, which we walked down to every evening. There are some good pubs which do great food which we recommend. Will definately return |
