This unique self catering chapel conversion provides accommodation for up to 6 people in Llanystumdwy, a beautiful and friendly little village on the edge of the Snowdonia National Park here in North Wales.

I like to think that one of the advantages of a self catering holidays over more traditional hotel breaks is that you get the opportunity to stay somewhere that's a bit different. Quirky Capel-Cariad certainly doesn't disappoint on that front. The conversion of this chapel has obviously been a labour of love.

Features like the huge gymnasium doors that shield the kitchen cant be found in a hardware store but hunted out, discovered and restored. It would have been easier to rip everything out perhaps and start again but original features like the pulpit and spindles have been retained and woven into the fabric of the new layout.

The high vaulted ceilings of the lounge give this space a sense of grandeur and history. As described, some huge and lovingly restored gymnasium doors subdivide the kitchen diner from the lounge. Their size and design ensuring the sense of space and light is maintained. A dishwasher, electric cooker and hob, microwave plus all the essentials are included. A washing machine and tumble dryer are located in a separate external porch.

Some curtains separate one small sleeping area on the other side of the ground floor. A second single bedroom is of a more conventional design. So older children or lighter sleepers should grab this spot perhaps. The family bathroom has a corner bath with shower over and the usual washbasin and wc facilities.

From behind the pulpit in this unique self catering chapel conversion, two staircases ascend to the left and the right to two more double bedrooms. So a maximum of 6 people can be accommodated. The larger bedroom on the left has additional seating in a more private space for relaxing perhaps.

Criccieth

Llanystumdwy is a very pretty and friendly little village on the border between the mountains of the Snowdonia Park and the more coastal plains of the Llyn Peninsula. The village is famous as being the birthplace of Lloyd George, the British Prime Minister during the First World War.

His childhood home is directly opposite the chapel and a museum commemorating his life just down the road. There's a great pub serving local food almost on your doorstep and a stocked fishing river just up the road.

The chapel is also a great base from which to explore the whole of North Wales. The seaside village of Criccieth is just a 5 minute drive away (and has the best ice cream in the world) and the Snowdonia mountains are only 15 minutes further on. There's pony trekking, sailing, paintballing, go carting and cross country Segway riding all available within a short distance.

The petting farm in nearby Chwilog is our family's favorite day out (despite the fact that we live on a farm) and should not to be missed. Take a pick-nick and enjoy the fabulous views as the children play with the newborn lambs.
