Home description

Wild Iris Guest House is an old, circa 1890 miner's cabin. From the outside, think of an authentic Wild West town log cabin...on the inside, rustic but newly renovated, beautifully furnished home. It's in the very historic centre, so unlike most American towns, you can walk to a bar or restaurant, have a few drinks, and walk home without 'drink n drive' worries.

The house has 3 bedrooms, two with queen size beds and one with two twins. The en suite master bedroom is the entire upstairs, the two downstairs bedrooms share a full (large) bath. All the furniture and linens are new and quite 'upscale'...we have an overseas posting and Wild Iris is our primary home. So it is very nicely apportioned.

The living, kitchen, dining area is an open plan with high ceiling and nice windows (we have the snow cut through for the two side windows).

The Colorado/Rocky Mountains region

Crested Butte's location with a lengthy drive from any metropolitan area (Denver and Colourado Springs, 4-6 hours drive) protects your holiday town from an influx of weekend visitors. Winter skiing has no weekend crowds...in summer it is still beautiful, quiet, and remote.

Last year we had 421 inches (35 feet) of snow (in European metric terms, that's about 12 seasons). At the END of the season there was still a 4 foot base. The resort is at 9,000-12,000+ feet (2,700-3700 metres); snow doesn't melt there until June. There is 1,000 metres of vertical drop.

This is the authentic American Wild West. People are the native Colouradeans that you will never find in Aspen, Vail, or Breckenridge. The driving distance from Denver and other metropolitan areas precludes large weekend crowds from descending on your own, very private ski slopes.

When you sit at the bar between two friendly locals, one will be the local ski instructor and one will be owner of large local software development firm...but you'll be hard-pressed to know which one is which (and Western folk would never ask!).

America's best fly fishing rivers are in this area (Black Canyon, Gunnison River, and many others), as are several great golf courses. The best summertime activity for us is high range picnics, mountain biking, and hiking. The local golf course is a Robert Trent Jones design...Redlands Mesa in Grand Junction has been listed as one of the Top 100 Public Golf Courses in America.

Crested Butte area

-- Crested Butte's nickname is "The Windflower Capital of Colourado".
-- Fantastic mountain biking
-- Summer windflower festivals, music festivals, culinary festivals, Fat Tire Bicycle Week...many more.
-- One hour away, over the mountain pass, is Grand Junction's Redlands Mesa Country Club, one of America's Top 100 public courses. The local course is also a Robert Trent Jones II design.
-- Rafting.
-- Day and extended horse back trips.
-- Famous hikes, including a long day hike overland to Aspen.

The closest airport is Gunnison (Airport code GUC). It is served by non-stop from United, American, and Delta out of Denver, Dallas, Atlanta, SLC, and Chicago. In winter, we do NOT recommend rental cars as they are totally unnecessary.

Alpine Express offers door-to-door service on your timetable, its a beautiful 30 minutes drive up the valley along a river.

All amenities are within a block of Wild Iris. In summer, we recommend renting a 4x4 for enjoying mountain heights and lakes.

Further details indoors:
Wild Iris has cable TV, Wi Fi Internet, a Bose stereo speaker system, and all the comforts of most homes. It is furnished as our primary resident while we live abroad....it is not a typical rental unit. You'll find up scale linens and comforters, and themed furniture pieces.

Wild Iris is strictly smoke free (there is a terrace off the living room for smokers...smokers will otherwise be charged and beaten), and we practice shoe-free interiors, Asian style. The handy mudroom with bench is perfect for shoe and ski boot changing, and for storing skis.

Further details outdoors:
The log cabin exterior gives the home a great feel, and you can barbecue on your terrace just outside the living room and kitchen, Yank style.

The closest margherita is at the great Mexican restaurant two blocks away, and other great bars and restaurants are just as close.

Crested Butte is at 9,000 feet plus (2800+ metres), and the snow is deep and light. The only ice you'll see is in your G&T. The snow usually is over the top of our roof, and its that great dry, desert snow that you hear skibums drool over. A lift line of more than 10 people is unheard of. Often times you'll have the runs all to yourself.

So take advantage of the US dollars plummet, and see a real Wild West town with the best skiing and best snow in the world. The snow is great from December into early April; the only USA week-long holiday is in March from the 13th to the 21 this year.

All other weeks only the happy hours are crowded. Crested Butte has all the charm of a Swiss ski resort, but with great snow, low prices, low crowds, and Western adventure.
