With just a 40 minute drive north west to the Atlantic coast you will find the sunny beaches of Fouras and Chatelaillon Plage. And to the south west, still just 40 minutes, there are the beautiful beaches of Saint-Georges-de-Didonne and St Palais-sur-Mer. With many more but unfortunately we haven't visited them all!
With Cognac a 35 minute drive, tours around one of the famous Martell, Hennessy or Remy Martin distilleries are a must.
Just 50 minutes from the beautiful coastal town of La Rochelle, a must for any shopper! La Rochelle has a wonderful ambience with many restaurants bursting on to the pavements. Seafood is of course the speciality. Just 60 minutes to the stunning Ile de Re. With wonderful shops to browse round at Ile de Martin and an amazing choice of pavement cafes and restaurants, all looking on to the harbour. Ile de Re has many beautiful beaches and more wonderful quaint villages to wonder around.
Originally a barn this beautifully converted, detached gite, has it's own private garden area, sitting amongst trees on the edge of the charming village of Crazannes, just a 5 minute walk from the River Charente.
Just a 10 minute walk is the Chateau de Crazannes, built during the 14th and 15th centuries, the listed Château de Crazannes has been entirely restored and furbished.
It is known as the "Castle of Puss in Boots" because it was owned by the real Marquis of Carabas during the 17th century !!
There is also the the Quarry of Crazannes ( les carrieres de Crazannes) which was a working quarry until the 1950's, it's beautiful white stone exported all over the world - rumor has it that it was used for the base of the Statue of Liberty in New York! An hour's tour will transport you back to the times when all was quarried by hand as you wander this amazing quarry.
Also a pleasant walk is the Chateau de Ponloy at Port d'Envaux this was rebuilt in 1770 on the foundations of a former Renaissance-style castle, Panloy offers an example of the architecture of Louis XV.
At Port d'Envaux you can find a small market every Thursday morning, there is also a wonderful bakery and a couple of restaurants. If you are feeling energetic here you can hire canoes and pedalos in the summer.

My wife and I have spent a wonderful two weeks in a quiet part of France.....no more than about 45 minute from city life just incase.......there was no real need.....everything about the accommodation was excellent. plenty of space, wonderful pool, patios, bbq......indoor and outdoor were both excellent, well maintained and plenty of room for bigger groups. We had days out to see the sights.....Cognac, La Rochelle, Ile de Re, Ile D'Oleron, Royan, Saintes to name but a few........or days by the pool........or both as the sun was out until late (9:30ish.....beginning of June). Relaxing on the patio with a little of the local Pineau....a couple of steaks or fish on the BBQ...... The 'super-market' 5 minutes away had everything so shopping was easy...... this place is a must for those who wish to completely turn off and relax for a week or so....

We had a great family holiday staying at l'olivier. Catherine and Terry were very helpful and were on hand for all enquiries. The gite is very comfortable and the pool is a real bonus. We visited some great beaches, interesting towns and good restaurants whilst staying there.

"What a great place"
A fantastic Gite in lovely grounds. Swimming pool was great and of immaculate quality. Loved the added extras such as the fenced off pool area, and the swings which was ideal for our son. There is a bigger Gite in the same grounds, but you really do feel it is nice and private. Would be a perfect destination for a larger group of friends or family . Really nice touch from the owners providing our son with a box of toys to keep him entertained. Without doubt would stay here again.

"Welcoming and comfortable base for exploring the Charente"
A lovely place to stay with beautifully kept grounds and pool surrounded by fields of crops and sunflowers and the Charente River. The hosts Catherine and Terry were very welcoming and thoughtfully left bread, butter, milk and wine for our arrival. There is a small local campsite nearby where you can order croissants for breakfast and there is a supermarket a couple of minutes drive away. Our teenagers loved the wi-fi that allowed them to keep up with their friends but the peaceful village was a wonderful place to get away from it all for us. We used the gite to explore an area of France we hadn't visited before and it didn't disappoint.
