Cottage | 2 bedrooms | sleeps 4
Benèze is a charming two bedroomed, restored stone cottage located in the peaceful countryside about 30 minutes from the Atlantic coast. The property completely self-contained with a private walled garden and views over the adjacent farm land. Neither the house or garden are overlooked by the nearby properties.
Benèze is located in the hamlet of Chatenet and within walking distance of Cravans with an artisan bakery and bar.
The accommodation comprises the large full-height living area with well equipped kitchen; the double bedroom, shower room and toilet that are all at ground floor level with no steps or level changes. The south-facing terrace in front of the cottage is also at the same level. There is a large bedroom on the first floor with two single beds. There are electric radiators in all the ground floor rooms and the living area has a chimney with a cast iron, wood-burning stove.
There is a secure stone outbuilding that has been restored with electricity and water supply that houses the washing machine and bikes that are provided for the use of guests.
The garden is situated at the front of the cottage and terrace, it is surrounded by a waist high, stone wall and has a parking space for one vehicle.
The property owners live nearby but not adjacent to Beneze. Near enough to be on hand if needed but far enough away for you to be it in complete privacy.
Tucked away on the outskirts of the hamlet of Chatenet Benèze is easily accessed from the main west-coast A10 autoroute. A variety of seaside beaches are 30 minutes drive away and Gémozac with all shopping facilities, weekly market and excellent swimming pool is 10 minutes by car. The nearby historic towns of Saintes, Pons and Cognac offer added interest. Bordeaux, La Rochelle and St Emillion are possible day trip destinations.
Low cost airlines fly from many UK and European airports to both Bordeaux and La Rochelle airports, both airports are about 100kms by road. The Eurostar TGV service stops in Angouleme with local trains to Saintes.

The Poitou-Charentes region
This region of southwest France enjoys a generally pleasant climate with long hours of sunshine and moderate rainfall.
The main features of the region are the coast and Gironde estuary which leads down to Bordeaux, and the inland area of gentle farm and woodland interspersed with towns and villages.
The estuary features the vineyards of Medoc on the left bank and Blaye and Bourg on the eastern side, or venture further to Bordeaux that has become the real treasure with the restored and re-envigorated centre easily accessible via the "park and ride' tram service. At the top end the estuary reaches the ocean at Royan that has some remnants of the "belle epoque" despite suffering bombardment during WWII. Along the Atlantic coast there are some lovely sandy beaches, the islands of Oleron and Ré lie just off the coast with bridges linking to the mainland. Old fortified naval towns like Brouage, Rochefort and La Rochelle punctuate the coastal stretch.
Inland the Charente river and various small tributaries meander through a countryside covered with vines and sunflowers in the summer months. Along the banks of the river are the towns of Saintes, Cognac and Jarnac all the their own ways steeped in history. The famous wine town of St Emilion is not so far away for the more adventurous.
Benèze is situated in the hamlet of Chatenet which is a short walk or cycle ride from Cravans with its artisan bakery and bar/bistro. The fields surrounding the cottage belong to the nearby farm that has a herd of beef cattle and extensive vines for the production of cognac. Local communities of Cravans, Rioux, St Simon de Pellouaille and St Andre de Lidon make for interesting cycle rides and each village features a romanesque church as well as interesting buildings in the local stone.
A few minutes down the road is Gemozac where there is a full range of shops including the Super-U and Lidl supermarkets as well as independent bakers, butchers, pharmacies etc. There is also a very good lido-style swimming pool with paddling area and water-slide which is open daily in the summer months.
