The Swiss Alps region

Though the general consensus about Switzerland is that it is snow bound throughout the year, Crans Montana enjoys a moderate and favourable climate perennially. Situated at an altitude of 1500m and located on the sunniest hillside in the valley the area has the highest recorded amount of sunshine hours annually in Switzerland – around 330 sunny days per year! As a result, the area produces some great wine, particularly the Fendant whites.

During summer, the temperature varies from 65-82 degrees Fahrenheit. In spring it is 46-59 degrees Fahrenheit and during winter it varies from 28-45 degrees Fahrenheit. The coldest weather is experienced during the months of January and February. The months of May to October favour golf, hikes and walks and December to the end of April is great for skiing.

Crans-Montana offers a particularly wide programme of activities all year round. It is diverse in its attractions and operates as a resort 365 days a year. From skiing and sledging in winter, to golfing and walking through trees 7m above the forest floor in summer, Crans-Montana offers something for everyone. The resort is a venue for major sporting events and, with a reputation as a golfing Mecca, draws visitors from all over the world.

At the bottom of the mountain is Sierre, a large bi-lingual (French/German) town and the capital of the district of Sierre. Between Sion and Sierre, discover the underground lake of St-Léonard - 300m in length, 20m wide, 10m depth, this is the biggest natural underground lake in Europe and you can visit by boat.

Sierre is also starting point for the tourist sites of the Val d'Anniviers comprising the villages of Vercorin, Chandolin, St-Luc Vissoie, St-Jean Chandolin, Grimentz, Zinal and Ayer. Sierre is connected with Crans-Montana by a funicular railway.

Sierre is host to a local wine museum (Musée Valaisan de la Vigne et du Vin) and of a museum dedicated to the memory of Rainer Maria Rilke who lived there until his death and is buried in the nearby town of Raron. Lac de Géronde is a small lake at its outskirts.

The wonderful Medieval city of Sion is to the west of Sierre and only 30 minutes by car from Crans Montana. It is the capital of the Swiss canton of Valais. Landmarks include the Basilique de Valère and Château de Tourbillon.

East of Sierre and about 40 minutes by car from Crans Montana is Leukerbad , the largest spa and wellness resort in the Alps. A copious supply of 3.9 million litres of 51°C water flows into the thermal baths of Leukerbad every single day, bringing relief to body and soul. Even the Ancient Romans appreciated the hot springs of Leukerbad and took the waters both to distress and re-energise.

Food & Wine: Many of today’s residents of the Valais had ancestors who lived off the land in the remote mountain valleys, cultivating their own produce to feed their families. They tended apricot, pear, apple and peach orchards, and baked their own rye bread. They grew vegetables on their land. Milk, cheese and occasionally meat were the staple foodstuffs. Today you will still find these traditional products and preparations, but new ones have also emerged, such as the spring crop of exquisite asparagus grown in the sandy soils of the Lower Valais, and brought to the table within hours of being harvested.

Food lovers’ heaven: For their recipes, the people of the Valais have tradition to thank, created by the imagination of their ancestors. Today these creations are still widely served: croûte aux champignons, a dish of mushrooms and toasted bread; Valais vegetable soup with leek, celery, turnips and onions; traditional bean soup; rice cooked with locally grown saffron from Mund; traditional polenta dishes; Gsottus, a variety of air-dried meats cooked with cabbage and potatoes; buttered chestnut brisolée, served with mountain cheese, dried and cured meats; or gâteau de Savièse, a leek, cheese, potato, and bacon tart.

The people of the Valais may be passionate about their traditional cuisine, but as descendants and spiritual heirs of the Valais hotel pioneer César Ritz, they are also open to influences from all over the world, and their own cooking shows exceptional imagination and creativity. For the last two years, chefs from the Valais have been named GaultMillau Swiss Chef of the Year: Didier de Courten in 2006, and Markus Neff in 2007.

To accompany this inventive and traditional cuisine, the Valais produces a variety of top-class wines. In addition to the wellestablished classics – whites Fendant (light, fruity, dry) and Johannisberg (ample, flowery and smooth); and reds Dôle (ample, full-bodied and well-balanced) and the powerful Pinot noir, there are exquisite grape varieties that only grow in the Valais, such as the Petite Arvine, Amigne and Humagne blanche. You can try these wines at any of the many Caves (family or village run wineries) up and down the mountain to Crans Montana.

Crans Montana

As a venue for major sporting events, and with a reputation as a golfing Mecca, Crans-Montana draws visitors from all over the world. Commune with nature in this family-friendly resort, where you can enjoy five swimming lakes; walks through aromatic mountain forests along an extensive network of footpaths; and cosy fondue evenings in rustic inns.

Summer Activities:

In addition to well-known sports like hiking, tennis and squash, Crans-Montana has facilities for canyoning, mountain climbing, water skiing and paragliding. The attractive skiing areas of the Plaine Morte glacier plateau are also ideal for summer hiking. Particular summer favourites are the five swimming lakes right next to the village.

Golf:

Crans-Montana has a long golfing tradition and has 3 great golf courses. The 18-hole Severiano Ballesteros Golf Course with its breath-taking views is situated on the high plateau of Crans. The international elite meet here every year for golfing tournaments including the Omega European Masters, every September.

Winter Activities:

The ski slopes stretch from the high plateau up to the Plaine Morte Glacier at 3000 m. Directly beyond the edge of the forest the pistes are broad and open, ideal for beginners and deep-snow skiers. Advanced skiers will take the chairlift to La Toula to find a really challenging descent. Particularly popular are the broad carving pistes and the valley descent down the Piste Nationale which, at 12 km, is the longest in the region.

In Winter the golf courses become a paradise for cross-country skiers and hikers. In addition to classic cross-country ski trails, there is also an extra piste especially for skaters.

"What a place!"

I stayed at Emrellino with my 2 young kids in March and it is a wonderful place. Very comfortable and clean with all gadgets you could need including 120 TV channels and a playstation!

Only a 30 second funi rail trip to town, plenty of great places to eat and lots of fabulous snow.

We cant wait to return!
