The Swiss Alps region

Tourism in the Swiss Alps began with the first ascents of the main peaks of the Alps (Jungfrau in 1811, Piz Bernina in 1850, Dufourspitze in 1855, Matterhorn in 1856, Dom in 1858, Weisshorn in 1861) mostly by British mountain climbers accompanied by the local guides.

The construction of facilities for tourists started in the mid nineteenth century with the building of hotels and mountain huts (creation of the Swiss Alpine Club in 1863) and the opening of mountain train lines (Mount Rigi in 1873, Mount Pilatus in 1889, Gornergrat in 1898). The Jungfraubahn opened in 1912; it leads to the highest train station in Europe, the Jungfraujoch.

Summer tourism

Switzerland enjoys a 62,000-km network of well-maintained trails, of which 23,000 are located in mountainous areas. Many mountains attract a large number of alpinists from around the world, especially the 4000-metre summits and the great north faces. The large winter resorts are also popular destinations in summer, as most of aerial tramways operate through the year, enabling hikers and mountaineers to reach high altitudes without much effort. The Klein Matterhorn is the highest summit of the European continent to be served by cable.

Winter tourism

Highest ski area in Europe above Zermatt

The major destinations for skiing and other winter sports are located in Valais, Bernese Oberland and Graubünden. Some villages are car-free and can be accessed only with public transports such as Riederalp and Bettmeralp. Zermatt and Saas-Fee have both summer ski areas. The most visited places are: Zermatt, Gstaad, Crans Montana, Verbier

Crans Montana

Crans-Montana, is a very well know sky and golf resourt in the swiss alps. you can ski at altitudes ranging from 1500 right up to the glacier at 3000m. The ski area includes 28 ski lifts – amongst them, the brand new "Nationale Express" chairlift. The area extends over 140 km of marked pistes, a third of which can be covered with artificial snow, so a great ski season is guaranteed in this region which is among the sunniest in Valais.

The choice of activities for families also caters for the very young (with, for example, walks suitable for pushchairs) as well as for teenagers who are looking for fun and an adrenaline rush.

Crans-Montana makes the headlines every winter with a music festival that is unique in the Alps : the Caprices Festival. The holiday resort is also a meeting place for athletes, for example, those taking part in the Alpine Skiing European Cup this winte. In summer, you’ll perhaps come across the best golfers in the world, here to play in the Omega European Masters. Organisation of these major events has over time forged Crans-Montana’s international reputation. In fact, the calendar is full of events which will bring a new dimension to your holidays.

Speaking of the golfcourse, imagine a plateau overlooking its 1500 m the Rhone Valley. Before you, the highest peaks, the Matterhorn to Mont Blanc. In this majestic as the pioneers of golf have developed the first course in 1906. Since then, the greens have continued to flourish in the sun and the greatest players let themselves be conquered by the natural beauty of the site. Here, golf is the conquered territory, with 4 courses, including the famous 18-hole given the same name as his famous creator, Severiano Ballesteros, ranked by trade magazines as one of the most beautiful in the world and host of the European Masters, a major event.

Crans Montana facilities: shops ( several important brands), restaurants, sports, swimming pools, tennis courts etc.. termal baths in leukerbad, museum in sion.

English actor Roger Moore has owned a chalet there for many years since moving from Gstaad; Australian pro golfer Adam Scott also has a home there.
