The South East England / Kent region
Pretty Windmill Cottage is located in a stunning part of the 'Garden of England'. Cranbrook, known as the capital of the Weald, is a few minutes walk away.
The Cranbrook area
Cranbrook is a charming town, with narrow main streets lined with typical white weather boarded houses and shops. Its famous working windmill is open for visits and supplies of flour. Cranbrook Museum is full of local artefacts. For the food lover, apart from the Michelin starred Apicius and excellent George Hotel Restaurant, there is a delicatessen selling local produce, as well as two butchers and a well stocked greengrocer and health food shop. Other specialist shops are a well-stocked cook shop, two stunning and affordable dress shops and several charming gift shops.
The local area has a rich selection of fantastic pubs serving delicious local beers and food; the Three Chimneys at Biddenden is a great favourite. A must for the foodie are the local farmers' markets at Sissinghurst and Rolvenden. The vineyards at Biddenden, Lamberhurst, and Chapel Down offer tastings of their renowned English wines and ciders. Richard Phillips' eponymous restaurant at Chapel Down is not to be missed!
For those wanting to do some sport there is an excellent leisure centre in the town with a pool, gym and flood light tennis courts. Hemsted Golf Club is just 3 miles away from the cottage. There are endless varied, safe, local dog walks, many of which start from Windmill Cottages! Bedgebury's National Pinetum, Go Ape and amazing cycle paths, is 7 miles away. There is a beautiful reservoir at Bewl Water (11 miles away) where it is possible to sail, climb, walk, sail or take a cruise.
Vita Sackville West and Harold Nicholson's original and stunning Sissinghurst Castle and gardens are within walking distance. After visiting the world renowned white garden you can walk around the estate, which has huge fields, ancient woodlands and lakes, with your dog!
Following up on the Bloomsbury theme, Virginia Woolfe's house near Lewes is 38 miles from Sissinghurst. Rudyard Kipling's home, Batemans, is just 13 miles from Cranbrook and is a fascinating place to wander around. Whilst in that area Sarah Raven's cutting garden, which is open several times a year, is well worth a visit.
Other days out could include other National Trust properties: Scotney Castle, Knole Park, Winston Churchill's Chartwell. Leeds Castle is 14 miles away is well worth a trip
The local towns of Tenterden and Tunbridge Wells are close by and have a great range of high street names and well as their own unique individual shops
The south coast is within easy reach: Rye, Hastings and Dungeness are great days out. The local Kent and East Sussex railway from Tenterden to Bodiam, and the narrow gauge railway between Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch offer lots of excitement for children and enthusiasts!
London can be visited easily from Staplehurst (5 minutes drive from the cottage). Trains take about 1 hour and depending on the time of day, leave every half an hour.

Apart from its ideal location, we found it very comfortable and homely (the decorated tree and mulled wine much appreciated!), as well as suiting our needs perfectly - just as expected, which is not always the case at all when booking "blind" as it were, over the internet!
