For Beach Holidays:
The sheltered and secluded area of Crail is said to be the one of the driest parts in Scotland, and therefore makes it an excellent choice for an ideal beach holiday. You are spoilt for choice with 17 excellent blue flag beaches to choose from in Fife. Roome Bay Beach is a mere 2 minute walk away, with many rock pools to explore and a children's play area. The coastline is part of the internationally recognised Firth of Forth Ramsar site, dedicated to conservation and protection of wetland habitats and the species which live and feed in these areas. Therefore, Crail and the surrounding coastline is a great area for bird watching at any time of the year. Elie Beach is 5 miles from Crail, and is one of Scotland's blue flag beaches, offering a wonderful walk of almost one mile of uninterrupted sand.
There is an excellent sailing club, and a water sports facility where you can hire equipment or head out on an inflatable adventure trip. Kingsbarns Beach is just 2 miles away. This charming blue flag beach stretches for about 2 miles and is bordered by rolling sand dunes. It's a very popular beach for walkers and the Fife Coastal Footpath passes above it. There is plenty of space on the beach for all the family and it is an ideal spot for a picnic. Kingbarns Golf Links, undeniably one of the finest courses in Scotland, runs alongside the beach.
Wildlife & Nature Spotting Holidays:
Animal & nature lovers will enjoy visiting the Isle of May where there are puffins, crags, seals and an abundance of wildlife. Fifeness Muir Wildlife reserve just outside Crail is where visitors can enjoy the fascinating spectacle of bird migration.
During the spring and autumn periods of migration, numerous small paths allow visitors to move quietly round the reserve - or better still, strategically placed seats allow observers to watch birds undisturbed. Approaching 150 species of birds have been seen from the reserve, including 17 species of warbler. During spring and autumn, recording is carried out on a daily basis, and the reserve is now a ringing station, with permanent traps similar to those on the Isle of May.
Birds have been recorded travelling to and from 14 different European countries from this part of the East Neuk. A log is maintained in the hut on the reserve, and the latest migratory news is posted on a display board. Visitors are welcome at all times, and the ringing station is run in a way that permits bird watchers to consistently enjoy the freedom of the reserve. Flowering shrubs have been planted, and the reserve is an excellent place for looking at the migrant butterflies it also attracts.
There is a good breeding population of birds, but during the breeding season many of the small paths are allowed to grow over to reduce disturbance.
