The Scottish Highlands region

Craigellachie is situated in the confluence of the River Spey and the River Findhorn. Set on a craig overlooking the River Spey and the historic Craigellachie iron bridge built by Thomas Telford. Many of the villages developed as a result of the whisky industry and this makes it a fascinating place to visit. Many of the famous distilleries offer tours and tastings. The area is rich in historic buildings from Ballindalloch castle, Cawdor Castle and Elgin cathedral to name but a few.
It is also not far from the stunning Cairngorm range of mountains and the skiing and hillwalking that this offers. It is such a diverse area that suits both the really active visitor and the visitor who is happier with a wee dram and a roaring fire. There are very few midges here at all and the climate is much drier than the west coast with beautiful frosty/snowy winters and fairly dry summers ( not that I can guarantee the weather). The beaches north of Craigellachie are big and sandy and you will likely have them to yourself. The area is popular with mountain bikers, fishers, walkers and canoists.
The Craigellachie area
Craigellachie is famous for the Craigellachie Hotel and The Highlander Inn which between them house some of the largest whisky collections in the world. If whisky is your passion then a visit in May for the Speyside Whisky Festival is a must.
Aberlour just two miles away has a good selection of shops includiing a great butcher and deli. It is also home to the famous Walkers shortbread and a visit to the factory shop is worthwhile. There is an indoor pool if you have a rainy day. Elgin just 12 miles away has plenty of indoor options such as bowling, cinema, library and shops. The famous Johnstons of Elgin cashmere centre is here and is really worth a visit.
