The Isle of Wight region
The Isle of Wight is an English island and county in the English Channel three miles from the south coast of Great Britain. It is situated south of the county of Hampshire and is separated from mainland England by the Solent. Popular since Victorian times as a holiday resort, the Isle of Wight is known for its natural beauty and for its world-famous sailing based in Cowes.
The Island's maritime and industrial history encompasses boat building, sail making, the manufacture of flying boats, the world's first hovercraft and the testing and development of British space rockets. It is home to the Bestival and the recently revived Isle of Wight Festival, which, in 1970, was one of the largest rock music events ever held. The island has some exceptional wildlife and is also one of the richest fossil locations for dinosaurs in Europe.
Cowes / West Cowes area
Cowes 50045’34”N 1018’01”W
Cowes is an English seaport lying at the north of the Medina River on the Isle of Wight. There are two towns, East Cowes and West Cowes, linked by a chain ferry known as the floating bridge. Cowes (West Cowes) is well known for its sailing events, Cowes Castle being the home of The Royal Yacht Squadron. The town gives its name to the famous regatta Cowes week which occurs annually in the first week of August. East Cowes is the site of Norris Castle & Osborne House. Osborne House is the former summer residence of Queen Victoria & Prince Albert now run by the National Trust.
Cowes grew up around busy ship and yacht yards and is now famous for its sailing events. It has boutiques, restaurants and cafes all for the discerning visitor. Take a stroll past Cowes Castle and onto Cowes green where the gentlemen had their villas and you enter a different world.
Cowes is an ideal location to explore the delights of the Isle of Wight. There is a comprehensive bus service on the island run by Southern Vectis. Visit the many areas of outstanding beauty, take a walk along the many footpaths, visit the south of the island or just relax and enjoy the hustle and bustle of the boats entering and leaving harbour.
